Does anyone have Honjo Hammered Fenders on a Fillet Brazed Super Sport? What size fender? What sized tire? Pictures?

Limit to Super Sport's tire size is the chainstays width, you'll have around 42mm to fit the tire, 33~35mm actual tire width is close to the limit with 5mm per side clearance. I don't have Honjos, but 45mm Planet Bike or SKS are as big a fender as I am able to fit. The front fork and rear chainstays are limiting the max fender width.

BTW, these measurements are from several Super Sport/Sports Tourer frames I have, actual measurements from frame in question.

Well, Super Sports came with 27x1 1/4" tires, so... 27"x32mm. So you'll probably want 43-45mm fenders.

I acquired an unused set of 35mm Honjo hammered fenders along with some fitting hardware.

Would these fit my 73 Schwinn Super Sport equipped with 27x 1” Panaracer Pasela Tourguard tires?

It has Sun CR18 rims.

It has been 12 years and you still don't have an answer? I think the only way to tell for sure is to slide them one and check the clearance. Considering that a 1" tire is around 25 or 26mm, the fender should work in general. The real question is whether or not there is clearance in the frame.

"The wheels are 105 5700 hubs laced to 700c Sun CR-18s with DT Swiss champion spokes. I had the Champions in stock and couldn't afford to get butted spokes, though I wish I could. I figure when it's time for that I will go all out and build a set out of something shiny and tubeless compatible if possible, with hubs made in USA. For tires I went with 35c Panaracer Paselas in a folding bead. Even though they allegedly are a similar diameter to a 27x1 1/4, They are the largest size that fit the fenders. This added a lot of time and profanity to the fender install. Next time I will likely do 32c just to retain what sanity I have left.

That is a beautiful Super Sport. He did a beautiful job with wider tires and fenders. Installing my 35mm Honjo fenders may be my winter project.

I think you’re right, but I have been daunted by the prospect of mounting these fenders. I just need to gather my drills, hacksaws, plyers, tin snips, darumas, washers, stays and keep at it until they are on there.

I can understand that. I go with pre drilled fenders. SKS if I want plastic and Velo Orange if I want metal. I would never be happy with my ability to center holes or smooth the cuts. I lack those skills.

I slid the Honjo 32mm fenders over the 27x 1” Pasela today and they conformed like a glove. I think these were made for 700 C.

I think it’s entirely doable though. The narrow fenders might even be easier to mount than wider ones. I don’t anticipate having to snip away large portions of fender.

Does anyone know the size and threading of the fender eyelets on the front and rear dropouts?

Is it limiting for me to think that faceted or smooth fenders correspond with European bikes and hammered fenders fit the vibe of Japanese bikes?

Those Honjo are beautiful fenders! I recommend Wald - made in Kentucky - smooth fenders. They look like the ones Schwinn equipped on their made in Chicago bikes.

FYI, I briefly test fitted a pair of Handsome Cycles' 35mm-wide 700C Mud Butler hammered fenders on a '73 Super Sport with 27" wheels (no pictures, sorry). They fit fine on stock-ish tires and cleared the fork crown without issue.

I would assume 35mm Honjos are a similar story.
