Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

I don't know about that particular car. I know some people love them and I have encountered some hard-core Volvo zealots before. Like a lot of things, luck plays a part, along with maintenance and having someone to help who you can trust.

Time to ride. Looks like a break in the wind today. Rode the mtb around the neighborhood Sunday and almost got blown over once. Today looks to be nice, though.

Like anything else, "cool" is in the eyes of the beholder. Newbies almost ALWAYS ruin what the pioneers enjoyed.

I remember how cool the internet was before the AOL barbarians came aboard (Eternal September). Sure there've been a lot of great developments and new technology since then, but the original atmosphere is gone and irreplaceable.

I'm in the exam room at the Dr. My appointment was 11:30 and no trace of Dr.

Lunch is the usual mustard, pickle, thin slice of ham on English muffin.

In non-P&R news, the cassette on the Crux is really on there. Failed first attempt. It may be because of my spindly roadie arms.

Stay tuned...

One foot for the whip and two hands for the breaker bar attached to the cassette tool.

That, or have your wife do it.

The Younger Boy turned 28 yesterday, so we had BBQ from a local joint, and cake. It made me realize why these two months are even more dangerous for me particularly than for most folks. First, there's my birthday on the 14th - big dinner, cake and ice cream. Then leftover big dinner and cake and ice cream. Then there are office Thanksgiving parties. Then there's The Younger Boy's birthday - big dinner, cake and ice cream. Then leftover big dinner and cake and ice cream. Then there's Thanksgiving, and days of leftovers. Then there are the usual vendor food gifts we get at work, plus any bakers bring in cookies. Then Christmas, and days of leftovers.

It's a wonder I don't gain 20 lbs in the last 2 months of the year!

Ugh, the covid bomb is blowing up in front of my eyes. Again. There is a couple in their 70's that we take care of, they refused to get the vaccine. Of course they now BOTH have covid, the husband is at home but sick, while his wife is very sick and in the hospital.

Sad.

A guy we know just died from it over the weekend. He was a major league baseball scout, and I imagine that in his mind he was invincible. He was in his 50s.

I was trying to get the freewheel off of Deadman, since it's a 13-24, and after a fruitless half hour one night I gave up. I spend some time on YouTube looking up 'how to remove stuck freewheels', and there was one where you put the wheel, with tire for traction, against a wall so it can't move, and then use the tool in a big wrench. So I got all ready to do that, and a the first nudge, the freewheel spun right off. "I must have loosened it!"

Then I figured I'd take off the cogs and swap in a 22 and 26 cog I have for the 21 and 24. COULD NOT spin off the low cog to save my life. No dice. I ended up just buying a 13-26 freewheel.

The data on the web says our county's incidence has doubled in the past 3 weeks, but it feels like it has quadrupled. I am suspecting the upcoming holiday gatherings are going to make matters even worse.

Sigh.

My favorite trick for a stuck freewheel is to put the removal took in a vice, and turn the wheel to get it loose. Does NOT work for cassettes, obv.

Nope. Vaccinated people can get sick/infected, I have seen that. But they typically have a mild illness. It's the unvaccinated ones who crash/burn.
