1985 Trek 620

48cm overall pretty good shape but not perfect. Some small paint chips. What have these sold for lately?

Depends on your location. A local sale in my market would be around $300. Ebay might be double that. Note, subtract fees, time spent packing and the pesky ebay 1099 (income tax) and much of the difference disappears.

Here's how to NOT SELL on eBay. Seller got $9 for his 620. Mistakes he made:

#1 local pickup only. If you want to require local pickup, then forget ebay and use C/L or whatever. The power of ebay is getting access to a nationwide, or world wide market. Local pickup means you just get the local market.

#2 auction, started at $1. Much better off Buy it now at what ever price you want.

#3 lousy ad, crappy pictures. Dented DT, with no picture showing dent.

This is the most desirable of the 620s with a full Reynolds frame set. There won't be a lot of comparables for this. It will likely go for less than a 720 as that was Trek's top end tourer. The small size will hurt value as well.

ebay sends you a 1099? They are reporting your yard sale as income?

Yes, ebay sends you a 1099, depending on how much you sell. Note the GROSS sales amount is reported income, which includes shipping. So the income will not match your actual income, and they have no idea what you paid or spent on the item. Ebay took over the payment process from PayPal. Its the payment processing that triggers the 1099, not the ebay sales. My understanding in 2022 the gross proceeds triggering a 1099 will drop to $600. Consult your tax professional.

So ebay managed payments will send you a 1099.

Best example I have on how this can work is the frameset I sold to a buyer in New Zealand. Frame went for $175, plus $425 shipping. (yes, shipments to NZ are expensive). So per the 1099 I received, I had $600 in proceeds. But in reality I had paid $125 for the frame, so I had a "profit" of $50, not $600. It was up to me to prove it!!

Oh yeah down under is crazy expensive. Even back around 2014 I had a guy wanted a set of NOS tubular rims I was selling but even if I just wrapped them in a single layer of newsprint was still going to close $75 IIRC.

including the shipping as actual income is weird unless they are figuring most people over estimate shipping to increase profit. It also must work to their advantage to call it sales.

it has nothing to do with them, IRS rules dictate. All gross payments received is what matters. It’s up to the tax payer to document their costs. Tedious work!

Please don't confuse ebay "asking" prices with "selling" prices. Many sellers never get their ask price. some are far from it. Value is determined once an item actually SELLS. Its easy enough to check SOLD prices.
