Simplex Joy 60 rear mech and shifter

I'm going through the inventory for my work and picking out some choice pieces I think the C&V crowd would be interested in. This is a beautiful and functional Simplex Juy Record 60 rear derailleur and friction shifter. Features the Simplex wing logo on pulley cage and as a sticker on the derailleur body, as well as on the shift lever. Made in 1960, this top of the line Simplex derailleur was also called the "Louison Bobet" Model. If you're looking, chances are you know all about this but if you have any further questions, don't hesitate to reach out. We have this listed at $2700 but happy to talk price if that seems way too high.

Wow.

Curious, what are the technical differences versus the Juy 543? Improved performance, and/or significant value of Juy 60 to July 543? Been staring at photos of both... what am I missing?

I think there's just not much data on how these ought to be priced. The one on evilbay UK right now is similarly priced.

But, I would totally pay $27.00 for this!

The 543 is operated by a split cable whereas the 60 is operated by a single cable. The 543 generally commands the higher price in my limited experience.

I agree that the price is very optimistic. I've only been following the prices on these for a couple years but I would guess that $2,700 is quite high even for N.O.S. in the box. Price drops off fairly steeply for derailleurs with evidence of age and use.

I was looking at the Velobase images yesterday and suspected that was the difference. Thanks for the education.

I have two 543's that I bought NIB in the 1970's, I think $25 each, using one now on a bike finally. To think I could sell both and buy a decent motorcycle with the proceeds! Anyway, GLWTS, but this reinforces my thoughts that asking prices on bike parts can be daunting, and bewildering. I've have good luck buying here on the forum, however.

Must be a pretty exclusive market for that, but these days there are quite a few people around for whom $2700 is like $27.00 for me.

Given the sales history of items like these, I would say a "ROUGHT" value could be $400/$500.

Obviously you are not the customer for this derailleur. Move on.

Classic Component Prices

Things are worth what someone is willing to pay for them...

I haven't been following the market for these kinds of things for quite a while but 10-12 years ago, Japanese collectors were driving the prices for classic French components. Many were not cycling enthusiasts. It was a hobby for them just like stamp collecting or Leica camera collecting. Just think of all the great stuff sitting in cabinets in Japan!

You can still follow some of those collectors on their websites. It's like Simplex/Huret Bingo - trying to fill every box with the complete offerings from the 1940's to the 1970's or thereabouts.

Many of them used brokers who searched the web for the items they wanted for their collections. Back when you could identify bidders on eBay, there were several of those brokers that I played Russian Roulette with when they started bidding up items that I wanted. One Brooks Pro saddle reached $300!

Fortunately I lucked out and was able to bail when the bidding prices got astronomical!

After a while, they stopped bidding when they saw my eBay ID so I was able to get the things that I wanted at a fair price.

Used to be that I had no interest in components earlier than the mid 70's. They did nothing for me since I was more interested in riding performance than collecting.

One of my buddies has several NIB Simplex Juy 543 or 60 RDs plus a NIB Simplex Suicide FD. I passed on those kinds of derailleurs back then when they were priced between $100 & $200.

Now days, I'd like to have real nice 1960's French bike equipped with those components.

A LBS has a Simplex Juy 543 or 60 RD in decent condition for sale for about $270... Hmmm

Does that $2700 include shipping?

Just kidding. Not having a bike that needs one of those & not knowing any better I would have passed it by at $27.00.
I'll go now. Out of my league.

Late to the game, I know. Bobet was associated with Huret, not Simplex.

At 2700 bucks, you might have to find a C&V bike collector equivalent of Jay Leno to sell the set. And he/she has to be really desperately trying to finish a classic French build that needs this particular model Simplex derrailleur set at the time.
The very used, "rider" condition of the components does not help, either.
You might gain back quite a bit of value, if you can clean up/service the components and maybe even try to get some of the corrosion off. With these rare components, condition Is king
I agree with Verktyg that realistically, considering its condition, it may fetch around a couple of hundred bucks max .......JMOs........

It is, indeed, difficult to determine the price for vintage items. I would like to know how the OP came up with the $2,700.00 number, if he or she is willing to say.
