Another 54 miles down to Crystal Cove and back. Basically the generic ride with my 2 buddies. Slow and with a lot of conversation.

another 38-spot but this one in metro sandy eggo. wasn't really motivated to particularly ride but wanted to be outside.
sitting under a shady tree in a comfy chair reading a good book sounded nice but lost the coin flip. went slower than usual
and stopped for a tri-tip sando for lunch and a few big pretzels later on for a little late afternoon snack. there may or may not
have been a beer or two involved at some point. was surprised to see balboa park, waterfront and fiesta island areas much
quieter than expected. uss midway aircraft carrier museum was going off tho.

exactly how i felt today. wanted to ride somewhere out of town but looked too hot pretty much anywhere but the coast that didn't involve a pre-dawn start.
was okay pushing the slow big gear on the big ring into a decent headwind for 10+ miles heading north up the coast but would have had zero motivation today
doing a climb/climbs in the sammos, san gabes or the san berdoos with the temps in the upper 80's + at some point. averaged out all the mountain area projected
temps and decided to pass. palos verdes was the only real alternative but was up there recently. ugh. maybe thursday will bring more motivation and/or better temps?
the butt/saddle interface feels good so looking for longer/more difficult in the next few weeks.

14 mi / 1600' of singlespeed MTB on my (almost) usual Cherry Canyon loop. In an attempt to mix things up a tiny bit, I went the reverse direction from my usual habit through Hahamonga Park on my way to and from Cherry Canyon. On the Cherry Canyon climb, a friend recently showed me an alternate route that includes a singletrack loop off the main fireroad. It adds a little more distance, but reduces the grade, which makes the grind a little less brutal. The downhill singletrack is always awesome. Physically, I felt pretty good. Mentally, I'm still feeling a bit down. I'm really in need of a change of scenery. All my usual routes are feeling boring and uninspiring. This weekend, I will find something new.

I will check that out. I reached out to a buddy in the Huntington Beach area. I might hook up with him for something near the coast tomorrow. Next weekend, I have plans with another friend to do the Hillyer and Vetter loops in the Charlton-Chilao area off ACH.

Maybe you should try a gravel bike? You can combine both your road and trail rides in one. That's what I usually do, makes the routes more interesting.

Yesterday I did 24 miles on the LA River bike path towards DTLA, but they re-closed the southern half of the path, so I back tracked and did the Griffith Park loop towards the rear fire road and hill climbed up to the Griffith Observatory. Also I was really sore that day, having done barbell squats the evening before so the ride was a bit more grueling for my legs. Normally I try to eat healthy after a ride, but my kids and I did a movie-in-the park later that evening and we carb'ed up on some good take-out pizza!

I have not been able to ride the past few weeks so I could allow my left shoulder to heal.
Did six 3+mile laps on the local roads to sort things out and see if I could climb out of the saddle and hold myself up while rocking. The experiment was successful and managed 20 miles and 1800 feet of climb with only moderate soreness.

21mi / 2500' - Sullivan Ridge-Farmers Loop-Sullivan Canyon on the singlespeed. First time riding in this area, and it was fantastic - especially the weather! The best part was sharing dirt and catching up with a friend (and former racing buddy) that I've known for over 40 years.

c-note encompassing a buncha bike paths. was so cooked near the end, i spaced on taking the sart to the newport beach area
(where i started) and ran the fairview gauntlet roughly a half mile east instead all the way to newport. tried to hook up with a questionable
rio hondo bike path interface heading sw towards the la river path and was rebuffed since it looked trespassing qualified (now it looks like
maybe i coulda gotten away with it). did the few miles of the whittier greenway path (southbound) which is really nice and pleasant and parallels
whittier and lambert blvd for a few miles. lower stretch of the sgrt is still nice...after the 10 miles northbound point, still handy but meh.
entertained the old in-n-out replica of the original hamburger stand in baldwin park since it's relatively close to the sgrt. had some good success
heading south from the whittier area on both la mirada blvd and magnolia blvd enroute back to costa mesa. both streets were relatively wide and with solid pavement.
longest ride since early spring. all five toes on the left foot were objecting in unison starting at mile 80. rest of the body? surprisingly good.
thought i was gonna hafta call 911 up by the santa fe dam. was 25-30 yards behind a strong rider wearing a new mexico jersey while riding east
on live oak/arrow hwy by the dam at the light where you can either break left and head onto the dam route and climb up it or right and hit the sgrt at the 30 miles
(to seal beach) point. dude semi-casually drifted into the left (dam) lane with an approaching truck coming on at speed. driver fortunately slammed on the
brakes. methinks the cyclist guy spaced out (we've all been there) and got lucky because it was close. my heart was in my throat. if either the rider or driver reads this,
there was a bit of luck involved there and a lesson in awareness for riders and drivers. glad everyone is good.

^^^^^ Brings back a memory while waiting at the Chalan Rest Area bike-crossing for the light to change, a speeding pickup truck blew the red light without even slowing. As I yelled @$$#*!=, I observed a bike in the truck bed. Takes all kinds I suppose.

Re. Live Oak/Arrow that road is much nicer early on a Sunday without all the industrial traffic.
Sometimes I ride a loop up the SGRT then after the golf course head west on the path (It's acually Siphon Road) over to the Upper Rio Hondo Path. Exit at Peck Rd. Park up Peck Rd. to California Ave. fork up to Royal Oaks Dr. East on ROD it ends at Encanto Park, Then back down and around the Santa Fe Dam park to the top of the SGRT.

32-spot in my second fave area to ride in socal.
https://www.strava.com/activities/5778213448
brand new pavement on eagle peak road and most of (paved part) boulder creek rd. farmer road and eastern half of wynola rd both sweet as well. ca hwy 79 still doing nicely. least amount of traffic up there i've ever seen...even zero or one car at popular hiking trailheads. i'll take it. was up there from 2pm-roughly 6pm.

31-spot in the big bear lake area. nice morning.

*edit* lots of road repaving in the big bear lake area but it all seems limited to side/neighborhood streets currently.
found most of the main thoroughfares pretty beat up and in need of repaving. did a little scouting at the top of ca hwy 18
by barrett lake before it plunges into the desert to check on that pavé since it really needed love...still really needs love.

Good to be back in SoCal and did three diff rides for bike and terrain diversity.
Dirt / Gravel in Temecula on Surly, hot and dry but pretty much had trails to myself
Road Temecula / Murrietta on TI also hot and dry, I need to get out earlier, not start around lunch time
Beach ride on Colnago Super from higher Ocean Side (76) to Del Mar and back. Cooler beach weather was wonderful and made 55ml enjoyable

For those who were up early enough to witness it the sunrise this morning was made quite picturesque by the band of monsoonal clouds over the desert. Since I started out heading E/S/E it was nice to watch it unfold.

18mi / 2300' - Singlespeed MTB with a good friend deep in the Angeles National Forest (Chilao - Charlton area). A few really tough sections, and a whole lot of amazing single track on the Silver Moccasin Trail. The damage from the Station Fire is still very vivid in some areas, but nature is fighting hard to push her agenda. Great ride, but I'd change my route next time I ride in the area.

Yeah as I was riding along that song stuck in my head for some reason. Agree Ann does a great job. She also recently did an album of covers of deceased artists' songs on it is a pretty good rendition of Tom Pettys' "Luna".

First Puente Hills ride in a while. Rode Turnbull Cyn for the first time since crashing. I like the Michelin Power tires for grip. Not good for drag and losing watts, but very sticky on canyon roads. Took it easy and feeling the loss of conditioning but that can be won back in a few weeks.
35 miles and 3500 feet of climb.

Just a flat 35 miles down PCH. I'm trying to calculate if I have the time and energy to eclipse last month's mileage. We'll see. The only thing is with this humidity and heat everything is going to have to be down along the coast.

30 miles today on my weekly Griffith Observatory hill climb. I also took the LA River bike path, but decided I wanted a change of scenery and just rode my bike on the LA River!
