There is definitely more orange than red, but the dilemma is that the red is closer to where those spacers will be installed, especially if you include the fork in the color scheme. The lower sections of the fork are red, and the frame goes from black to red to orange to yellow (from front to back):

ooh good point. Since it’s in line with the fork, I think you’re right and that red is the way to go.

straight seatpost arrived last night. installed it today. added a spacer under the stem as well. got new water bottles too. Riding tomorrow morning to see how much better it feels.

I had a CAAD 4 R1000 with the fire paint scheme. It was my first real road bike. The frame ultimately was too small for me. It was a 54 and I ride a 58, but I still wish I kept it. Sweet paint job and the orange gold hubs matched really well.

Mine too. But it is 400 mm long so I likely have to cut it to avoid hitting the top water bottle boss on the seat tube. Add another to do for this build.

Ride yesterday felt much better. Was surprised how low I had to set the seatpost though - looks kinda meh, but, frame geometry was different back then. Ultimately, I should be on a size 50 I think, but finding a 52 was basically a once in a lifetime thing - don't think i'd ever find a 50.

Having some issues with my headset again as you probably saw in the mechanics forum. Need to figure that out. And get some matching spacers, and I think I might be set. I think i will eventually replace the bottle cages. I initially liked them, but I'm finding I like the color splash less and less as I ride more. We'll see.

I think I'm mostly dialed in, but didn't want to take pics until I had spacers that were all the same color. Might end up just doing it this week anyway.

Unfortunately, I somehow managed to sprain the second and third toes on my left foot, so between that and work, no riding or working on the bicycle.

Congratulations! What spacers are you talking about? I thought you were going to cut your steerer tube after the stem has been finalized?

Looks like I was getting ahead of myself a bit. Fit wise, having it at the top of the existing steerer seems to be most comfortable for my reach at the moment. If I ever do decide to take it down I'd probably need to shorten to a 70mm stem, from my 80mm.
But for now, I'm gonna ride it for a few months and see how it really feels. If I decide to take a little more aggressive, I will.

I too favor the old school racing quill stem look, i.e., installing the stem to minimize the angle between the stem and the steerer tube even if it means having more steerer tube spacers.

A 60 mm tall shim (25.4 mm to 28.6mm) for 58 mm of exposed 1" steerer. Stem shims are not that tall, so I ordered a seat post shim: Amazon.com: Thinvik 60MM Bike Seat Post Shim 22.2mm, 25.4mm, 27.2mm to 25.4mm,27.2mm,28.6mm,30.4mm,30.8mm,31.6mm Bicycle Seatpost Tube Adapter : Everything Else



The top cap from a Cane Creek 40 Headset for a 1" steerer tube (Ec30/25.4/Ec30/26) is just wide enough for the shim.



So I ordered a Wolf Tooth Bling Kit for the spacers and a top cap with an integrated spacer which can also cover the stem.

the sci guy Your bike looks so good! Barely 18 lbs. and that's with a 11-34 cassette! (I have a feeling that mine may end up lighter than my CF bike.) What brake cables are those?

I have made very little additional progress on my R4000. I have installed an Ultegra 12-25 cassette on the rear wheel, but that is mainly to keep all the cogs together (after upgrading my other bike to a Prestacycle 12-28 Uniblock cassette).

the cables and housing are jagwire kits ordered from Amazon only because my local shop didn’t have the colors I wanted.

I think the bike looks better with one yellow and one gray cable set up front. The brake cables almost disappear, as though they were shadows of the yellow shifter cables, and because there are only two yellow cables, the front end looks a lot less cluttered.

Thanks! Aesthetics are important to me, and I love colorful bikes. I hate black cable housing, so I always try to find 2 colors (if needed) that work well together, and work with the colors of the frame.
