What a beauty! Where did you source your decals?
Also digging the early Klein font rather than the later "Klingon" font.

Tig welder and some stock aluminum chunk. Filed it best I could to match the existing profiles. As for decals I ordered right from https://www.kleinspainted.com/ as well as cable tubes, chainstay protector and replacement bottom bracket bearings

I’m throwing this out there hoping someone can help, I’m looking for a black 1” threaded headset. Would prefer XT but would entertain something else. The Chrome FSA I have won’t look correct on this build. Thanks😊

Chrome headset

So the chrome headset i have won’t look right on this build and payment $150 for a black Deore XT is not happening either I decided to try the Duplicolor paint option. Unbelievable how this turned out. Will try it until another option presents itself

It's actually a great idea, those cans are $20 a piece so not cheap, I've done frames with that paint where I used the Dupli base coat (the frames weren't shiny chrome so you need a proper base). Durability has been good. It's actually clear coat paint with color added. You can add more clear if needed to make even shinier. I'd just stick with this headset

Pedal refurb complete

Pedals are done. Quite happy with the results. Engravings filled in fairly well and look great from 5’ 😉

Have to wax it before fitting up components but seat post showed up today and I had to have a look at what she’s gonna look like

This bike needs some purple anodized cranks and cantis. With nuclear-waste-green Ringle Peace Sign cable hangers.

Jus' sayin'...

--Shannon

PS: Evil thought... Dupli-coloring the thumbshifter bodies and brake lever blades would look rad... until you actually rode the bike.

Pullin Noodles

Well I needed to be a bit of a contortionist, and had to hold my to tongue a couple times so I didn’t curse out loud but i manage to pull the noodles through the frame. Used needle, thread, gravity and a beefy magnet to get these through. A second set of hands would have made the job a lot easier. More progress and more lessons learned.

Bottom Bracket

Another one of my stresses was remounting the bottom bracket bearings. I intended to use a large C clamp to press the drive side bearing in but it wasn’t strong enough. My wife thought I was losing my mind when she found the shaft and bearings in the kitchen freezer🤓 i found a socket from a ratchet set that was very close to the bearing outside diameter and with some backing a some cautious hammering i was able to get in. Putting in the no drive side went similarly poor. Bearing actually went in more easily but the alignment was off on the drive side bearing and the shaft turned but with a lot of friction. I used my depth probe on my caliper and found that it one 1 mm out of square to the frame. Couple firm taps with hammer and screw driver I was able to knock it into alignment and she spins wonderfully. 😥glad that’s done without any damage to paint or parts

As she sits

Current status, likely won’t change much for awhile as I build up funds to get the specific parts I need to continue. Likely purple anodized canti's, cable set not sure housing color black likely, Ringle purple water bottle cage and likely new saddle Flite or Turbo maybe change handle bar to Syncros if I happen across something I like and oh ya not sure about the tires white would be dreamy or maybe tan wall? so ya basically done lol......

1/4 black chain and seat stays, black fork, black crank...

Black tires.

Black housings, too. Ringle cages would be the diggety dank.

I've been using SRAM chains for so long, I don't even know what else to recommend.

Cosmetically, they all end up kinda lookin' the same after a few hundred miles anyway, no? (Except for maybe colored BMX chains, but I haven't had one of those since the 1st Reagan administration.)

--Shannon

PS: Oh, darn... I think I just figured out what you meant by "chain type"! I was talking about the fact that the last 1/4th of the chainstays and seatstays are painted black... had nothing to do with the color of your chain.

I are dumb.

thanks for the input, I’ve been using KMC chains and am happy with them as I really only do city trail riding. I think something with black inner links and nickel outlets would look the part. Am really wanting to try hot wax as chain lube though. That would be new to me but it sounds like it’s the new go to.

on a side note I am the dumb one for not know what 1/4 Black chain and seat stays meant. 🤓 learning the lingo as I go.

This came out while I was deep into considering dropping out of college to become a bike mechanic full time ( spent more time in the shop than I did on homework too ) ! This is a super cool build to follow, and is bringing up so many memories of that era!

New Bars…… not😥

so brain cramp on my part, the new Syncros bar I’ve been waiting for arrived, i was so excited then sooo crushed. The wide clamp portion of the stem will not accept the riser bar. Now what settle for the Titec bar, find a 1” Syncros stem with hinged clamp or a flat Syncros bar with 5 deg sweep. Hmmff I’m not great at being patient and money not endless.

A Win

Tried from the bottom but the threaded insert were simply pulling out. So I pondered for a few hours while at work and determined to put nuts under the topside and press from there. Had to really open it up but worked flawlessly.

Glad you got the bars sorted! I'd forgotten but have used that trick before myself. Wasn't sure I'd like the riser with this vintage/year build but I think it really works. I typically go with all flat bars on all my 90s bikes. The Syncros bar color and logos really make it work appearance wise and you get a more comfortable riding position, nice!

ya I get that the flat bar is probably more correct for the purist but I do plan on riding this bike and at my age a little more comfort is my primary focus. Plus all that Syncros looks Ace to me 🤩🤩
