The Disasters Thread

The dust cap was "rust-welded" (I forget the term) stuck in the left arm due to galvanic corrosion. First the hex rounded. So I drilled two holes into the cap to turn it, but it’s still not moving. I manage to remove the bb from the frame with the left arm still attached. Now a hammer and punch on the cap — this thing will not budge. New strategy is to sacrifice the arm for the bb. I hack two cuts through the bolt end of the arm and extract the remains of the cap. Got the bolt loosened. Now how to remove the arm from the spindle? I hammer at the loosened bolt — nope. So then I hammer at it with the spindle resting on on a piece of wood (lateral force) and it starts to come free.

Turns out the spindle has a couple pits in it.

PS: Though I wasn’t specific, I was initially thinking mechanical disasters. Note that below there are reports of personal injuries.

Sorry, no pix (so I guess you have to trust me it happened). Here goes:

1) three rear axles, two hollow, one solid, at the drive side bearing cone

2) Shimano front hub flange across three adjacent spoke holes

3) left side Agrati cottered crank across the spindle/cotter eye

4) 1970 Sugino Mighty Compe crank across the pedal eye (dumped me, minor-but-painful injuries)

5) 1990ish Campag. Veloce left crank, crack across the distal end of the spindle eye

6) 1971 Nishiki Competition / American Eagle Semi-Pro frame -- seat tube lug broke away from the bottom bracket shell

7) 1973 Peugeot UO-8 frame chainstay between the tire and chainring clearance dimples

8) SunTour platform pedal frame crack

9) SunTour Cyclone front derailleur -- seat tube clamp broke away from the body

Fortunately, no chain, stem, handlebar, or fork failures

A few years back, I was riding my own bike with one hand and transporting my daughter's bike with the other hand. I was traveling at a low speed--maybe 10-12 mph--when her bike started to drift. I put a foot down and...disaster! Shattered both my tibia and fibula.

I don’t think it’ll ever be 100% but I got to about 95% after 12 months. Riding a bike came easier than walking, and I was able to get back on a bike after only about 10 weeks. That really helped my sanity and kept me motivated to push through PT.

Broken Crankarm!

Very unexpected fail on a critical ride for me. Had to limp into Calistoga on a deteriorating crankarm. Found a bike shop that serviced me immediately after they learned I was in the middle of a brevet that I needed to qualify for PBP.

How in the hell?

While not really a Shimano true believer, I do find that amazing and hard to see.

It’s all over the internet, the inner and outer part of the crank separates. Dissimilar metals and moisture rarely create a positive long term outcome.

Priority, the bike doesn't heal.

In addition, fractured scapula, severe tissue trauma to the forearm (nerves still recovering), macula damage (corrected in 2021) in the left eye, trauma to the left shoulder, and of course road rash. A piece of glass imbedded just below the knee bled for a year before I discovered, with a loop, and removed.

21 MPH hit on a car that cut in front of me that I didn't see in time. No turn signal.

Well I guess the small crack in the seat tube doesn’t rise to threshold for this thread.

While I mean no offense the injured and lame, when I was a pastor, I would peg much of the above as "an organ recital." More specifically in this instance, an orthopedic organ recital. While some might claim, "these are C&V bones," they are not bicycle bones.

Now, back to the intended programing;

DA AX RD dismounted from the hanger and destroyed two vintage Roval spokes, which seem to be unobtanium.

NEAR DISASTER:
I tried using the Octalink crank removal tool on a square taper crank. Luckily, I noticed before I reached for the BFH.
