Shimano 12 speed crank + 11 speed derailleur?

Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Shimano 12 speed crank + 11 speed derailleur?

Hi. I’d like to swap crankset from 175 to 172.5 - my bike has an 11 speed R9150 group set. To widen my options in the second hand market I’d like to know if I can use one of the new 12 speed dura ace cranksets/chainrings with my R9150 front derailleur (and 11 speed cassette)?

Is the spacing different? Can the R9150 front derailleur handle it? Do I need one of the new chains?

Thanks!

Shimano's compatibility chart says no. Well, it doesn't say yes...it doesn't say anything for that combo. It might work, it might not. I for one haven't tried it.

Doing some research I found this: "The only thing you can never do is mix different speed derailleurs or mtb / gravel / road derailleurs. All derailleurs have to support either 10-speed or 11-speed and from the same ‘category’."
This is from the Better Shifting website.

I haven't tested it, but it should be fine. I'm around 98% sure. I've run a 10-speed crank with an 11-speed groupset with no noticeable difference.

You might need to dial in the front derailleur a little to get it shifting spot on, or it might not shift quite as cleanly as a full 11-speed setup, but I'd say the difference would be negligible.

Once I used an Ultegra 6800 11 speed crank on a bike with an otherwise 10 speed 105 5800 drivetrain. Worked flawlessly. Not what you asked though.

A lot of people use the shimano 12 chain with their 11 speed bikes. I'd expect the crank to work too.

Only possible difference I could see is that the 12-speed chain rings might be infinitesimally narrower than the 11-speed .... but we are talking variances so small that they don't matter.

As others have said, mix-and-match has worked in the past. The only places it might not work would be if you were using a very wide (6-7-8) chain with a much narrower (11-12-speed) cassette, or rear derailleur---and of course MTB systems might have (some certainly do have) different cable-pulls.

Since it is not my money or my ride ... proceed with total confidence.

Agree it should probably work.

I have a friend using a 9200 crankset with his 9100 drivetrain. Everything is working fine.

I currently have a 12-speed crankset on a 11-speed drivetrain, no issues so far. Our bike has a R8000 drivetrain but wanted shorter cranks so we installed r8100 cranks.

While the forum is talking compatibility, I'm trying to freshen up my older bike with 5700. The shifters are shot and I've considered getting the newer 10sp Tiagra levers as replacements (NOS 5700 levers are hard to find and more expensive than 4700) to use with the existing FD/RD, but I've read that they're incompatible... Is the pull ratio different, or will they work with some finagling? If the pull is different, are there any shiftmate type devices to make 4700 levers compatible with 5700 FD/RD?

You won't know unless you try. On my gravel bike I'm running an 11 speed GRX/105 crankset/chain/rear derailleur with 10 speed XT cassette/GRX front derailleur and GRX shifters. My bike shifts even better now with the 11 speed components versus when it was entirely 10 speed GRX.
