Took advantage of a break in the atmospheric river to check out some new ped/bicycle infrastructure in Portland. Lots of rain and wind this weekend, and lots of road debris, so I opted for stability.
I don’t know what these flowers are, but I’ve got to remember to have Jeeves plant some.
They named a new ped/bike bridge after Ned Flanders, because Matt Groening went to high school a few blocks from here.
That was the most interesting part of the new bridge; otherwise it blends right in. Lots of other cool street stuff that has happened during the pandemic. I hope they keep them closed to cars for good!
Back along the river. This person was having fun. It would have been fun to be riding in that direction!
Climb up through Riverview Cemetery. Hard to capture how yellow this spot was!

My wife and I had breakfast at the Crystal Hotel a couple of weeks ago, and overheard from an employee that McMenamin's has that outdoor seating on the street until at least July of 2022, so it's probably closed off until at least then.

Rode with noglider and a bunch of others up the Old Croton Aqueduct trail. My first group ride since the poop hit the fan.

My SoCal bike riding ended in a bit of a whimper today. I drove from Westwood over to Griffith Park to ride up to the observatory with vague plans to ride further up into the Hollywood Hills. The ride up to the observatory was typical for the climbs I’m used to back home, about 2 miles with 5-7% gradients. Unfortunately I couldn’t go to the observatory itself because, according to the security guard it was “too dangerous”, but really because they were shooting a movie. Authentic LA experience I guess. I descended down the other side but it wasn’t too exciting so I rode back up and descended the way I came up. Near my start I followed a couple of guys up another street with some stiff climbing but I think they were probably heading home as everything dead ended into a gated palatial home. Only about 10 miles of riding but good times and good excercise.
Downtown LA
Century City and Westwood in the distance. This is a couple hundred feet from the “Dangerous” observatory
On the way up
Lost in the Hollywood Hills but I look fabulous baby.

Repeat post from the autumn thread. Super windy today, so I cut it short. 20-35+ mph winds on the road, and while the trails were shielded from that a bit they were covered in wet leaves and sticks ready to slip at the slightest.

Blue Ice! I should have used that on a movie exec while I was there.

A respite today from the wind and rain so I was able to rake up the leaves in the backyard then get a short ride in this afternoon.

I rode up to the lake where, last summer I’d go on night rides to swim during those unprecedented heat waves we had. It’s now just a great memory. The lake level is much lower now.

It’s not unusual really given the history of this place. By winter, the water level will be so low you can walk around the remnants of the old flooded town.

The wife did 21 miles with me tonight at Critical Mass Los Angeles. She went past her usual 12-15 mile maximum. I'm proud of her. We had a fancy dinner of tacos and ice cold coke at the end. I'm a romantic like that.

After 36 hours of rain, did a 28-mile "ice cream+cake" ride into the city. Haven't ridden in the city since fall of 2019 (because, you know....)
Temps were in the mid-50s, but lots of leftover clouds above downtown. Looking south from Belmont Harbor.
Pretty good wind out of the north. Coast guard launch was keeping it on the pipe to plow through the chop.
Northwestern sailing team had the good sense to stay within the harbor walls.
Traveled on the Roscoe "greenway" for a bit.
The "L" is always lurking about.
Finally got to checkout the crazy-long
Riverview Bridge.
Good to get out - temps only in the early 40s next week...Brrrrr!

Yesterday I rode "Betty Bleu" down to...
Cannon
Falls.
The trails were pretty empty, even with temps up in the 50's F.
It was a beautiful day for a ride, and this old Peugeot was the perfect mount. So smooth...
