I heard it might be in Rock Hill, SC a week before or after Masters Track nationals.

That said, Augusta is only a 2-hour drive from RH, so that makes sense too.

So WTF? I go on USA Cycling and there appears to be no link for Road Masters Nationals. Aren’t these things set long in advance?

They are not set as far in advance as you might think. Last year, I think we got 10 weeks notice for Masters Track Nationals in Indy. It was the week before (after?) a family wedding, so I really couldn't attend.

USAC tries to have a tentative schedule in place as early as possible, but ultimately, USAC is not the promoter. These events are hosted by USAC, but a local promoter submits a bid to actually put on the event. If no one wants to put on the event, then USAC has to start looking for other promoters to do it. From what I hear, fewer and fewer promoters are putting in bids. (There are a lot of reasons for this, some, but not all, of which are created by USAC's policies.)

At the same time, for things like Road Nationals - at all levels - USAC tries to lock in multi-year deals to ease the process. But if something goes wrong with a course or event - like Winston-Salem in 2016 - they then have to find a new location for the following year.

Also, while letters of intent can be signed early, sometimes things fall apart when negotiating the final contract. I also know that in one case, USAC pivoted to a new location after a state legislature suddenly decided to pass a law that conflicts with USAC values.

All this is to say, putting on events is really hard. While I would appreciate USAC doing more, I understand all the complexities involved.

I get all that. But it is no friggin way to run a railroad. For many people, going to Nationals is a big deal commitment, from a financial , time, and training point of view. Give me a year’s lead time to plan, and I’d consider a long trip to get there. Tell me 10 weeks in advance and it’s a crap shoo, whether it fits my training schedule, vacation time, and travel budget.

That said since they got rid of tandem events, which were one of the last venues to race tandems, I’m done. ( unless maybe trying to win the 80+ category, if everyone faster than me dies or quits by then.)

Bueller? Bueller?

Just sad that this was the last post in the 33, and no one has posted in this, or any other thread for more than a day.

I'm a bit horrified at how quiet BF is. Psimet pointed out good reasons, but it's still appalling.

As a baby master, I look forward to when nats might be held in the western US.
