Yellowstone and Points East??

So a few questions for you fellow tourer's.
Anyone know when Yellowstone will be opening their campgrounds and how late they remain open?
As I am thinking of a start in the first week of September are there areas that will be closed because of the weather?
Any information would be appreciated!
Thanks!!

The official NPS website for the park should tell you when (or about when) campgrounds are scheduled to close. Same with Teton Park.

Would you look at that?:

June 15 - Madiison - Oct 18
June 17 - Grant Village - Sept 13
June 17 - Bridge Bay - Sept 7
June 19 - Canyon - Sept 20
July 1 - All others - late Sept to mid Oct
(Tower & Fishing Bridge closed all season)

Cabins are open in most locations.
All hotels will remain closed for the season.

The key issue is staffing - -
Most seasonal employees - park service and concessions - live in dorms.
And they are often young folks who like to party.
So the park service wants a minimal number of temp employees.

<<<>>>

September used to be a glorious time for local Wyomites to visit the park.
No longer. With Boomers retiring, the Sept season is almost as crowded as summer.
Plus with reduced services can be harder on a bike tour.
Add to that the MUCH reduced services this year and it might be really tough.

All campgrounds except Slough Creek have hiker/biker campsites.
Madison - so-so, right behind the check-in station but they usually offer free coffee
Grant - just a basic campsite, but some services may be open nearby.
Canyon - great sites off the beated path, showers, store nearby
Bridge Bay - meh, a parking lot, and no nearby services
Norris - nice, esp. visiting the geysers at dawn or dusk when nearly empty
Indian Creek; Pebble Creek - remote, but nice
Lewis Lake - mosquito heaven
Mammoth - a bend in the highway

<<<>>>

Snow anytime in September - it's usually gone in a day or two.
Absolutely beautiful sapphire skies, but it an be chilly - down to 20F.

Agree about Madison and Grant, which I stayed in 20 years ago.

I think many people who have never visited donít realize that typical summer temperatures donít apply. When I woke up at Grant there was frost on the ground. That was near the end of June. I, myself, was quite surprised.
