Safe tent

Hello. I had planned on touring with a 520, but am not at this time and may never be 'able' to in the future. I have a scoot ordered from Harley-Davidson and still want to camp. Last time I did this, I picked up a 7' X 7' Coleman and had no complaints. But, now I tend to worry more about the health and safety of products and not just how well they work or function.

I am looking for an easy to set up tent that wont off-gas any chemicals and pollute the air inside nor the air outside.

Cost, weight, and size are no objects.....

7'X7' , quality, environmentally friendly, cool breezes, no leaks, easy to set-up quickly (like at night in the rain).

Thanks Gentlemen for any help!

I'm not sure where you can find the information you are looking for. However, I have spent months in various tents and the only thing that I can think of is that it may have caused me to go bald

Good luck in your quest. There are some folks on this forum that may actually be able to help.

For a "safe tent" your options are pretty limited. You can look at getting a custom tent made which is quite pricey, or use a non-treated canvas tent like an old-style military shelter half. You may look at buying a used tent that's already off-gassed, but then you risk finding wear and tear a little too late.

Do a Google search on camping with MCS and see if that gives you any ideas. The tent suggested above won't work because it's been treated with a flame ******ant. The military definitely puts function over safety and environment.

Shouldn't you be more concerned about fumes from the motor vehicle than the tent?

I suspect the most off-gassing tent fabric in the world isn't significant compared to emissions from a small internal combustion engine operated for more than ~10 minutes.

Keron 4 GT ? 4 person tent ? Hilleberg

Even has pictures showing it being used on a motorcycle tour in India! If it is good enough for dog mushers in the arctic, it should be good enough for a Harley trip!

Wrong forum I see. I just dont want to be part of the twenty first century's version of the twentieth's asbestos.

No need to be smart-elecky. I haven't gotten much of that from this forum over the years. Guess I can see what I find in stores OTR that 'seem' alright and proudly display a prop 65 warning the way Wal-Mart used to with U.S.A.

Or better yet, why dont I see merchandise that states it is prop65 compliant?

I suspect that any tent with a venting/airflow design will mitigate the dangers pretty well for the campers. I also suspect that off gassing is more of a concern early in the tent's life span.

But there's a question about personal exposure VS wider social cost. Andy

I've seen army surplus tents that were treated with bug spray

I'd go to your favorite outdoor store and sniff some tents.

As others have mentioned, tents are pretty breezy.

Store at home hanging rather than rolled up.

nice to see that the younger, i'm guessing here, generation is conscious of environmental issues. god knows, mine wasn't. kudos.

OTOH i had a couple of fair to middle'n snarks that involved recycled wheat germ and tofu, that i suppose i'll just have to choke back down, now that i've posted a sympathetic response. oh well....

If you want to try to avoid exposure to outgassing of the fabrics in tents you might consider cowboy camping at least some of the time. I did a few trips where I used a bivy, but only slept in it when conditions demanded and slept in the open the majority of the time.

In a different, but similar in some ways approach, you might consider a tent that has a body that is all mesh and then leave the fly off unless conditions demand. That way you get pretty good air circulation.

I have used both of these approaches quite a bit. My reason is different than yours, but it seems like it would alleviate your concerns at least somewhat. I sometimes did it because it was hot to be closed in and sometimes just because I like sleeping in more open conditions

Start with this:

Harley-Davidson reaches $15M settlement over pollution charges.

And this:

NoiseOff

Not sure some of the desired attributes go together, especially a 7'x7' tent that's quickly set up in the rain. Years ago, when our boys were little and I agreed kicking and screaming to some car camping, we bought a PahaQue tent (PahaQue's Family Camping Tents). Very well made out of good materials. My experience with many larger tents is that they are either made with substandard materials, assuming the users will set them up in the back yard or use them a few times for car camping, or they are top notch, but insanely expensive. PahaQue seems to straddle the well made / fairly affordable line.

A material like the PVC that they make inflatable boats like Aire is good stuff. It would make a tremendous tent, albeit a little heavy.

My best guess would be one of those old school canvas tents. Bass pro shop also has some "prospector" tents for hunting camp type use. Not sure what the smallest size they come in and how easy they would be to set up alone. Hope that helps some.

Pretty well any nylon tent is going to be fine in terms of VOCs after being set up for a few days and nights. Set it up in the back yard for a couple of days before you go.
Even new canvas has VOCs on it, they need some kind of wax to repel water, and often the wax is carried by a hydrocarbon solvent. Plus you'll need to regularly re-proof it if you use it hard. There is a reason nylon is really popular.

I don't think you can import stuff from Cuba because of the embargo. Might be able to do it through Mexico.
