Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Aesthetically, the Campy is far better looking than current Shimano.

I think he’s right. The Ferrari being the good looking, massively overpriced one that’s always broken, and the Ford being the one that is tough, priced fairly and one of the best selling in America.

Over 80k miles on my first set of Campy shifters and never had a problem other than changing out old cables a couple of times. Funny that you pick the brand known for, “found on road dead”, “fixed or repaired daily”, “F’d over rebuilt dodge”, and “At least they circled the problem”, in this comparison as the dependable one.

My Colnago has 105 and as horrific as that may sound to some, it gotten me down the road just fine for 5 years.

Your bike your choice. Do whatever you like even if it hurts the feelings of interweb strangers who has nothing better to do than impose their sensibilities on others. They'll get over it, the hurt feelings is just a bonus.

A Ford F150 is definitely more dependable than any Ferrari. Shall we let sales records do the talking? Please compare sales figures for F150 vs any Ferrari, and figures for Shimano Ultegra vs. Campy anything. I’d think that if either of those didn’t work well, they probably wouldn’t be very successful, but they are both VERY successful.

Why don’t you petition all the Ferrari owners you know and ask if they would trade theirs in for a F150?

I can definitely think of a lot of F150 owners who would rather own an F150 than a Ferrari.

I can also definitely think of a couple of Ferrari owners who at this point probably WOULD rather have an F150 than a Ferrari too, haha

If we're going to talk about Ford and Ferrari, how can we ignore the GT40, Le Mans 1-2-3, etc?

Anyway, getting back to the subject, I was GCNing just now and happened to come across this video -

Yeah, Johan Museuuw's Colnago C40 with Dura Ace.

The analogies are getting dumber by the second.
-The Campy gearset isn't going to net you performance gains like switching from an F150 to a Ferrari would.
-The Campy vs Shimano = Ford vs Ferrari doesn't make sense in any capacity such as reliability, performance differences or brand perception.

I know folks with Porsche's, Ferrari's, Buggatti's...you name it. They actually like Ford's. But if you can't afford those marks, trash Ford I guess. It must make you look cool.

The groupset on your bike looks like 11 speed Record, and the pedal spindles look perfectly normal. Have you tried to actually remove the pedals and compare them to the other ones you have?

Yep. The spindles are bigger on the Colnago. The pedals off of it would not fit my wife's new Cannondale. They were too large for the crank. It is also definitely a 10 speed cassette.

The rear mech looks like 10sp Record and the levers may be lower grade than Record in which case they could be 10 sp but the newer shape.

That is extremely unusual. Would you mind sharing some photos of the two different spindle sizes, for educational purposes?

I'll try to get some tonight. Do the older Campy set ups have different sized spindles? I ask because you said that the Record groupsets changed to 11 speed in 2008. That means this set is not factory. I believe that this bike came stock with Ultegra (from reading online anyway...).

I don't think they did. It would have to be a custom modification of the crankset as well as custom pedals.

Back to the original question. Sort off...So, is this frameset worth putting any money in to? I know I won't get it back if I sell it but that isn't really a concern. Is the carbon decent? Would I be better off (end up with a better bike) just buying a Trek SL 5 or the like? In the end, I may ride this bike more than my primary since it is easy for me to leave in the day (I can take a 1.5 hour lunch for working out) if I want and not so easy to get out of the house at night. Family obligations and all...

I'd ride it as is for a while. If you like the ride and the fit, then go ahead and put some money into it.

I am far from an expert on all things Campy, but I would think any crank from Campy especially with carbon arms, would have standard pedals. I’d really like to know measurements on these pedals.

Yep, pictures and more details on the difference in the pedals. Very curious as to where you got a bike with different size holes in the cranks for pedals unless someone put an asatbula or such in them.

The Ford, Ferrari thing is getting tiring. It's subjective as to what is better. Depends on individual tastes.
