I installed a new odometer on my Strong and wanted to confirm operation, so I rode around the neighborhood just long enough to confirm everything worked as intended. And then I rode a different bike, the Bridgestone, to work...although I won't ride it home, I'm going to take it to the shop after work for some very much overdue maintenance. I'll probably wind up with a total of 12-14 miles for the day.

19 miles to and from work today - took off a little early in order to get home and to optometrist in time to pick up the first actual prescription sun glasses I've ever had. Progressive addition lenses in Nike frames that should keep the wind, etc out of my eyes better than my everyday glasses. They will be incorporated into my bike commute tomorrow. Averaged 16+ mph on the ride home, much better than my norm.

Tuesday's ride. Overnight at Paradise Lodge on Mt.Rainier.
Still plenty of snow above 5000 ft.
Been enjoying some climbing in rather scenic spots.

20.0 miles (32.2k). At least Ma Nature has been kind enough to give me nice mornings to ride between wind and rain storms.

On Wed I needed saddle time and climbing. I find that with the proper gearing, the long climbs become as much a mental thing as physical.

Like.......
?Why at age 67 would I ride uphill for 15 or more miles? (when the 2-lane(?) road width, and surface condition minimizes carefree high speed descents)

So I took the triple chainring, Titanium, Mr Dependable bike.
Bought as frame/fork and wears mixed Campy 10 with CompTriple RD.
SMP saddle is a padded model - I like the feel and may buy a more expensive model next saddle, as it allows me to rotate hips instead of bending the long back on a 6'1" frame.

The roads were FS25 & 23 which run south - east of Mt St Helens and west of Mt. Adams - between these 2 volcanos and just south of Mt. Rainier. Amazing how close the 3 really are. Not like Hawaiian ones, these guys blow their tops off. May the Ring of Fire in N. America stay dormant for a few more hundred years!

edit: In 2 days riding, I spent 1 in an old growth forest and 1 in a managed forest. The feel is amazingly different = Preserve older forests, for your grandchildren's sake.

Saw no mountains today on my commute to and from work. Saw a few tall buildings in downtown Indy, though!

I have noticed a pattern lately. We start out with clear to partly cloudy skies in the mornings.
By afternoon we get those pop-up showers, which can progress to full fledged thunderstorms by evening. Anyway, it's keeping the humidity sky high.
Got in 100 minutes today before the showers began.

Looks like a good tropical storm is heading our way for the weekend. Hoping to do 60 this morning but only got 40 miles in. Hot temps in the 90s with high humidity. The closer it got to rain time, the stronger the winds got, which accounts for the 40 miles. Ended up not raining as bad as predicted.

Earlier this morning around 8:00am, I went out for a bicycle ride down to Richmond's "Pony Pasture" area, along Riverside Drive by the James River. Man, is the river still way up high after all that heavy rain we had. There was a section of Southampton or Hickory (other side of the Huguenot bridge) that looked like it was totally under water from the storm! Anyway, I did 15½ miles in a speedy 16.2 mph, keeping up with all the racers in their bright neon full kits. I'll explain a "rude encounter" below too regarding those (expletive) guys and their lycra outfits (sorry - anger management issues - forgive me...)

Okay, here's the scoop.... I was coming off Huguenot bridge (seen near the bottom of the map), and taking the ramp down to Riverside Dr (turning left towards Southampton & Hickory - aka the left "leg" in the bottom of that map). All of the sudden, two guys all decked out in full kits on $5000 Cervelo & Cannondale racing bikes, scream past me at Mack IV. One screams at me, "ON YOUR LEFT!". The other, more rude, more nasty, rider screams, "MOVE!" as he too blows past me. Both riders blow right through the stop sign on Riverside Dr and keep going. The rude, (expletive) rider also shouted out, "Damn Fred! as they both tore off to parts unknown.

You gotta love bicycle riding at 8:30am on a Saturday... Tuckahoe Shopping Center at Forest and N. Ridge Rd

This is on the way back from Hickory & Southampton heading back towards Riverside Dr and the Huguenot bridge (seen in the background behind the trees on the right).

Lastly, this is the famous "Z Dam" on the James River. Look at the water rushing over the dam and the downed tree on the far left!

30 suburban/rural solo miles from home this morning - south from Indy suburbs to Johnson County. Not sure how far I would have to ride south to get out to purely rural countryside. Subdivisions are everywhere.
Oh, and it rained for a little bit halfway into the ride. But it blew through shortly.

We had a small group that rode 103 miles with 3800’ of climbing from Kannapolis, NC to Love Valley, NC. It rained for the majority of the ride but everyone enjoyed it. Most importantly there wasn’t any lightning and everyone rode safely.

Haven’t posted in a while....Last week in VA was a total rainout. It poured Sat AM, causing me to bail on the Tour de Madison. This week, back in FL, got in a few decent rides, dodging a few weather bullets along the way. Early this morning, wife and I headed to Charlotte area of NC, and since I packed along the Domane, I got a nice afternoon 30 mile ride in before the storms came. The roads here have no bike lanes, are in worse shape than FL roads, but offer nice scenery and rolling hills.

Just under 40 miles heading north of Cleveland, NC on nice back roads. Cool Springs Road runs all the way to Interstate 40,where I turned around and headed SE into the town of Woodleaf, then back to Cleveland. Roads are tight without bike lanes, but drivers here appear a bit more attentive than in FL, perhaps due to all the twists and rolling hills.

I figured I may not get to ride tomorrow (rain?), so I tried to make this one pay off. It did, I’m pleasantly whipped....

Well, I live in Indy so the tandem club's ride today was 500-related. 26 mile ride mostly on rural Shelby County roads followed by a Raceday pitch-in and listening to the race on the radio. Very hot today - glad I once again was not at the track.

48 Miles today. My cardiologist just put me on two new drugs to slow my pulse, this was my first ride on them, I could really feel it. I was passed by some young woman like I was standing still on the last hill coming home. I get passed, especially after 40 miles occasionally, but its usually some young kid in full team outfit, but never had my doors blown off before.

56 miles yesterday. Just riding a solo loop. Compared to an organized ride at the beginning of the month, I never stopped, ate nothing, and drank one of my 2 water bottles (but only when stopped at what I knew was a long light). At the organized ride I stopped at each of 3 stops, scarfed down what they were offering, and drank a bottle at each stop. I think I did the stopping, eating, drinking just 'cause it was there.

Went for a nice bicycle ride this morning with my lovely wife of 32 years. I rode my beloved, C&V, 1985 Fuji Del Rey road bike. My wife rode the 2009 Schwinn Alum Comp MTB (was mine - but lowered the seat, lowered the stem, etc... and set it up for her - and it hardly ever gets ridden ) Anyway, we did a very nice, very easy, bicycle ride at 6.65 miles in 43:30 for a leisurely 9.2 mph speed.

Good Lord, did I have to slow down! I mean, guys, we all love our wives to pieces, but, is there anyone else like me who's wife just DOES NOT want to go for a bicycle ride? I had to almost drag her out of the house kicking and screaming just to go for a short, very slow, 6.65 mile ride! She complained the whole way, and at some of the hills, she whined about turning around, leaving me, and going back home. I had to gently reassure her and remind her to shift the Schwinn down to the smallest chainring in the front, so she'll make it up the hill. *sigh*

This was the simple 6.65 mile ride we did this morning....

Here 's my wife Margaret (looking less than enthused) as we debated about going across the street into Deep Run Park, but opted to turn around and head back home.

Here's me at the top of the hill at Raintree and Falconbridge. I tore off down the hill, leaving Margaret in the dust, and got up to 27 mph (speed limit 35). I stopped and waited for her at the bottom. She was NOT exactly happy with me taking off like that! (Sorry, baby... Just trying to "ride like I ride"... Oops...)

13.6 miles (21.9k). Everyday has been "as health permits". The Epogen (one of the ones Lance Armstrong took) to build up red blood cells is playing havoc with my BPM (high) and BP. I hope these VA doctors know what they are doing.

26 tandem miles on the Screamer today. Passed on the opportunity to ride 54 miles and instead stayed with a group that included several riders new to club riding. We stayed together and chatted much. The club has been making efforts toward not scaring away new riders. One lady was enthused after the ride - said this was first group ride she hadn't been left behind on. And that she would be joining the club.
