1976 Raleigh

I'm in search of a cottered bottom bracket spindle (crank spindle) for a 76 Raleigh Colt. It has the .620" dia. ends and is 140 mm (5 1/2") long with Y-3 stamped on it. I've searched local sources, some come close but not long enough. The main thing is the length so the chain ring clears the left chain stay. Thanks for any info or links.

Are you wanting to keep it original? I'd think you'll have better luck putting a newer BB and crankset on it. Though you'd have to figure out if the BB shell will take anything different that is available today. Many from that time period will, but not many from that time period were still using cottered cranks. Or at least not the bikes I was interested in. Things were already changing fast then.

Yes, been to England and some amount of globe trotting as well. Have one coming from Minnesota. So many variations of a particular design, it made my head spin. Overall length, chain side length, and most critical is the bearing width that relates to bracket size. I was given a beautiful NOS Phillips one and tried it out. That's were I found the bearing centers and chain side really add up to a good chain line or too close to a stay. Close doesn't always get you the cigar. I'll know in a few days.

Let us know how you make out.
Colts aren't as common as other models.

Is the bb shell BSA ("English") threaded or Raleigh's proprietary threading? You might find more info in the "Classic and Vintage" forum here.

Hats of to Moe!! His offering got me back on track, and the chain line is back to normal. Now on to the headset. Good thing I checked; some of the balls in the upper race are missing. I counted 19, I think 5 or 6 are missing. Off to the bearing store..

Working through the bike, got the bottom bracket, front hub, and headset all cleaned and re-lubed. Now I'm into the 3 speed rear hub. It was filthy! Dry grease, dry bearings, and whoever really greased the gears pretty good. A good bath in the parts washer and ready for assembly:

Finally completed and rides very well. The frame is small for me but it fits the wife just nice and a small raise on the seat post gives her a good leg length for easy cruising.

A Classic
