Century in 5 weeks - how to avoid overtraining

Nearly every year I do my favorite century, the Civil War Century. 105 miles, 7,800 feet of climbing, beautiful course and ice cream at the end. I build up to it with summer riding and a couple of flatter centuries in July & August. Unfortunately I had a serious issue in my family and I had to travel far to deal with it. So the whole month of July there was no riding - just hopped on the bike for a 20 miler (relatively flat) and know I'm way behind schedule.

I'm semi-retired now so if I want to I can ride every day 15-25 miles and get some hill work in, with weekends jumping up to 60 or so. I want to avoid over-training - I was thinking of maybe 3 20 milers during the week and maybe a 60 miler on weekends. That too much, not enough? Any suggestions (besides drafting my buds)?

I doubt it's possible to overtrain in 5 weeks. It's not necessary to ride over 150 miles/week. You want to taper your last week. Make your last weekend ride ~50 miles and don't go too hard. Then ride about 50% per day of what you did in the previous week. Take the last day before the century off.

So you have until Sep 10. Think of that time as a series of blocks with adequate rest after each block of training. Subtract the 3 days prior, then divide by how many days you can do in a row before you get seriously tired + your required recovery period. Now that you have your blocks mapped out, go as hard as you feel like you can for the training days, take your rest days no matter what, then allow an extra rest day at the end just in case you need it.
