If you live in a high humidity area like I do, cotton is your enemy and tech fabrics your friend. The Reebok tech sport boxer briefs sold at Sam's, WallyWorld, Target, etc are about the best bang for the buck I've found in undies.

It's worth it to have a few pair of Swiftwicks, but I hear ya. My next favorite would be Smartwool with Light Elite cushion - you can sometimes find good deals on them via REI or Sierra.

If the shoes you'll be wearing the socks with are going to be replaced in the near future, get the shoes first, then the socks. Thicknesses vary, even within a brand's lines.

I should have mentioned prior, but the Pursuit line, or whatever they're calling their merino blend socks these days, are my absolute favorites. Their Olefin (sp?) socks are nice if you don't want/like the forefoot and heel cushion of the Pursuit and if you want more compression.

I run/cycle in Swiftwick Aspires. Thin, firm and responsive. Not much cushion. No bunching. My wife on the other hand runs in the Maxus line. Thick and cushiony. She also likes Balega brand socks. I haven't tried their comparable sock because they only come in no shows or a longish cuff.

I gambled and bought a some cheap chinese "giro" wink wink socks off ebay last year 6 pairs for I think $12. They seem fine to me other than being longer than normal which is a plus to me for mtn biking. Socks are pretty much socks to me and I do have some nicer sock guy socks to compare them too.

Go to basically anywhere else online- performance, competitive, jenson, chainreaction, bike24, bikeinn, biketiresdirect, etc and buy whatever is on sale/discount/closeout.

I have run the gamot on sock brands.....Swiftwick is by far my favorite and it's worth it to have a couple pairs in your drawer....there may be cheaper socks but if you can pick them up on sale and in a 3 pack even better.
