Using your bike as a Self-Defense weapon? Yes!
This is a brief reading from 120 years ago about how to use your bicycle as a self-defense tool. I wonder if someone riding a $6,500 carbon-fiber one would rather get hurt instead of throwing the bike around like this!

Yep... We should always keep these things in mind. And definitely have a lawyer on retainer if we have to do it. Of course some of us have other means...

You will come upon him with an irresistible momentum, as though you had dropped from the sky, and if you have not sufficiently damaged him when he strikes the ground, you, at least, are on top. On a group ride with the Tacoma Wheelman in the late 70s I used my front wheel on dogs that were attacking some of the lady riders. In Germany my friend Charlie and I stopped the beating of a 16 year old girl. It involved the ex boyfriend and three of his friends. I used the wheel to brake it up. Near a dozen years ago I was on my Tandem stopping for a light. I all of a sudden am shoved forward. I hear a yell then see another rider as he slides on his side to the left of me. This started the most bazar month of my life involving him the police and several of his bike riding friends. It ended with two of his friends taunting me and threatening to whoop me. they forced me to stop and I dismounted and picked up the tandem and shoved two of them to the ground. Yes I dropped the Burly Bongo on top of them and put weight on the stoker seat tube with my foot. I asked them If they were through and after they answered I took up my tandem and watched them leave. The third rider was a girl and she seemed pretty entertained by what happened.

In the 1980s I had a blue book of bicycle care in which there was a section about self defence. It describes that if you're being attacked by a gang, aim to run over one of them ( instead of through a gap between them). If you aim for one particular person, chances are he'll get out of the way to avoid being run over. If you aim for a gap, they'll crowd you and knock you over.
If you're being attacked by a dog, keep the bicycle between you and the dog. Jam the bike or the tire pump into its mouth (horizontally). By instinct, the dog will bite it and hold on tightly. Then you lift it high and kick its balls or its belly.

A decent mini pump makes a nice club.
Also I second the ride right at them strategy mentioned above. Our MUP that goes through the city used to have several assaults per year before it got gentrified. Those areas are now lined with super expensive houses and coffee shops etc.
Anyway .... I used to speed up and crowd the trail when confronted with weirdos ( perfect example .... guy obviously slinging crack rocks to obvious crackheads. Obvious because he had crack rocks in the palm of his hand. They would see me coming right at them like a freight train and edge over. I would make space at the last minute always watching them. A guy got clocked with a 2x4 one year so creating some space in the last 10 feet or so was always a good idea.

When I was a messenger, I observed what appeared to be two tweakers having a verbal confrontation. As one of them turned to walk away, the other lifted his heavy department store BMX bike with two hands, and threw it into the back of the retreating tweaker. That guy went down hard, with a quill pedal to the back. It looked nasty. I didn't hang to see the aftermath, but I'm guessing he didn't get up for a while.

I didn't see it, but heard about some thugs using blades disguised into pumps, like sword canes - come to think of it, they wouldn't be out of place in Peaky Blinders!
