Dang it, I've been meaning to pick up a front rack along these lines (https://velo-orange.com/collections/...rated-decaleur) but I haven't had time to research the pros/cons of a VO rack. The Nittos Mark's rack would be nice, but has been out of stock for ages. Feedback is welcome if someone has experience with VO front racks.

The email from VO was perfecting timing. I've been in the market for a new frameset for a multi-surface touring bike build for my better half. I had been considering a few different framesets and was having trouble deciding. The 20% off sealed the deal for me and ordered the Polyvalent Diamond.

I've got a Nitto M-18 on one bike and the VO canti-mount rando rack on another. They're both great racks. The finish on the Nitto is more 'satin' and the VO is shinier/polished. VO styling is a bit more rounded & retro, though purely for aesthetic reasons I kinda wish it didn't have the four extra threaded bosses for mounting lights, etc. I like the idea of the integrated decaleur on a front rack, but I move my rando bag around on a couple bikes so it didn't make sense for me. The Nitto rack has the advantage of changeable struts- if you find yourself moving the rack to a different bike with different mounting points on the fork you can swap in different length struts (though I suppose the bolt-on struts could be considered a possible point of weakness...)
Personally, I think the doubled-up struts on the Mark's Rack are overkill.
In any case, the VO stuff is pretty nice, and with the sale the price is considerably less than the Nittos.

Thank you to the OP. Last month they had some of their metal fenders which looked attractive. Then Postage. Then Duty. Then Exchange Rate. Then Border Taxes. And, just lke that, the fenders were off the menu. Enjoy if you are Stateside!

Question: Do any of you have this problem when visiting the VO site? I am constantly barraged with a pop-up asking me to subscribe to their email newsletter and other announcements. Of course, I did so years ago, and even have re-subscribed since they updated their website. The constantly appearing pop-up is so annoying!

I ordered my Mark's rack from Japan and just waited months. Glad I did.

Thanks for the feedback and specifically for pointing this out-- I need to have adjustable struts.

VO racks are wonderful values. You can save a few ounces and buy one of Rene Herse's offerings. The finish is a bit nicer as well, but once you put a bag on it, they're mostly hidden.

That particular rack is a smart idea, and at 20% off, a steal. It's good for a small to medium-large size bag, but unless you're getting a ginormous handlebar bag, this'll do the trick.

Check to make sure you have a place to attach the stays on your fork, other than that, it's got enough adjustability for most bikes.

I feel for you Canadians. I've shipped a few racks and decaleurs up north, shipping and duties really hurts. Just sending to Vancouver, B.C. (which isn't that far from Portland, Oregon) is the same pain. I have a few customers that have friends or P.O. Boxes in Blaine, WA for that reason.

I usually snag some items when they do these and this sale is no exception. A fresh set of Facetted fenders, a long French bb for a triple I intend to put on my wife’s Motobecane, another randonneuur bar which was already on sale and nets out at a can’t-pass-it-up $32, and a few accessories. FedEx says deliver is tomorrow so that’s cool.

Check the BB when you get it- I recently got a 'French' BB from VO and, though labelled as French it turned out to be Swiss (I think- the threading was right but both sides weren't righty-tighty). VO were great about getting me the right one, and hopefully they checked their stock, but if you're not going to get to the build for a while might be good to check the BB when it arrives.

This would mean a trip down there & back, warehousing fees / postal box rental for the items, and in the end the exchange rate, duty, border taxes don't change. Any postage saving to the border on the U.S. side would be negated by the trip hassle.

It is ironic that purchasing an item from Ireland (i.e. Chain Reaction) sent here is much less than having it sent from the States.

Thank man. We get hammered. I wanted to buy a bike that is listed for sale in Bellingham and a BF member offered to step up and bring it back over to the BC side (thank you!) but that kind of fizzled due to costs.

Americans can import US$800 before being targeted for duty and probably more if the customs agent is too busy to process it. Up here, it is a $20 threshold - in CDN. Many times if ordering in a set of C$60 duty value tires (from CR in Ireland) we don't get dinged - too much hassle for the border agent for a low value item. Other times, if said agent isn't as busy or they are given quotas by superiors, then that same set of $60 tires receives the full body cavity search tax & duty treatment.

But, this thread is about the V.O. sale. Take advantage of it guys if you live in the CONUS! I bought a couple of their steering dampers a few years ago, along with some pulleys and a few other small items.

Good tip. I'm probably a few weeks out. I have found them to be a good company to work with. Once I managed to mess up one side of a threadless bottom bracket, and I sent an email asking if they had any parts. The response was that they didn't stock them but they'd look around in case one was in a drawer somewhere. They found one and mailed it to me for free.

This could be a place to ask, “ How can the VO cranks be good for 5-11 speeds? Sounds good. Put it on my 6 speed and leave it on there if/when I go mod and brifter like.

Grand Cru 50.4 works just fine with my 10-cog brifter setup.

I ordered a Campeur rear rack and Rando w/decaleur..

Since they didn't have the little bolts that hold it to canti bosses, so I had to go to RH and get those and a couple other things

Also check how the crank from the Motobecane fits on the VO BB. I'd been under the impression that ISO & JIS were 'close enough' that it wouldn't matter, particularly putting and ISO crank on a JIS spindle, but....no. My Stronglight 93 does not want to seat on the VO BB in an acceptable manner- the arms are a good 5mm further out on each side than they ought to be...
