N-1 -- 2020 Clunker Challenge Completed
I'm not very good at N-1, but today I finally let one go out the door. One of the members of my cyclocross team is helping out a family from Afghanistan, and they needed a bike to get to work. I was happy to pass on my 1973 Nishiki Olympic
Here are some pictures of my grandson Ezra giving it a final inspection before it goes off to its new home.
I picked this bike up in 2016 as a parts donor for the Clunker 100 Challenge that year. When I got it, it was a 40 pound pile of rust.
Having moved the gears and wheels onto another bike, I tried this one out as a single speed. I think I might have ridden it about 10 miles like this. I'm not really a single speed kind of guy anymore.
After that, I stripped it down to bare metal with the intention of painting it, but it took a while for me to get around to that, so it spent about three years sitting in my garage in this condition.
Finally, for the 2020 Clunker 100 Challenge, I decided it was time to finally paint the thing and get it back together. I sprayed it and built it up with parts, mostly from the Box O' Crap, and rode it 100 km.
Finally, freed from the budget constraints of the Clunker Challenge, I added some decals, fenders, a front derailleur, and new crank. Then it continued to sit in my garage for another year and a half or so, as I planned to give it to a local bike charity but never got around to it.
Today, my part in this bike's story ended.

That’s a nice looking bike Andy and well done on the final disposition. I did not know you were a Grandpa - maybe you weren’t last time I saw you. It’s been a while.

Yeah, he was born in April 2020. There are a whole lot of people I haven't seen since then.

Nice post and I really like the finished bike and the way it is going elsewhere. Nicely done.

No, I had to look it up to see what you were talking about. That was @Murray Missile. Same color though.

Great job Andy!
Nice final product and it can take fenders if the new owner needs them. Good on ya for the donation! Smiles, MH

I think this may be a timely reminder for the reintroduction of another iteration of everyone's favourite trash polishing contest.

And yes - I HAVE been checking regularly, waiting for this moment, for this time of frenzied misprioritization and dubious life choices. Because of my altered living situation, my intentions are to restrain myself this year and NOT acquire a raftload of old iron for the contest ... but we know
which intentions pave which road, so ...
