Paris-Roubaix: 1x vs 2x - Women vs Men

While trying to get a sneak-peek at what the newest Trek Domane might look like via the Paris-Roubaix bikes, I was surprised to see that Trek put 1x setups on pretty much all of the women's bikes as they did last year, and the Trek team kicked-@#$ in the women's Roubaix. However, I've been able to find little or no evidence of 1x setups in the men's peloton from the few photo galleries I've seen (like this one on Road.cc).

Why would the women's teams be riding 1x setups and the men riding 2x? Are women tougher? (I think they probably are, but I digress...) Is a 1x12 all riders really need these days?

I've tried a 1x setup and just don't like the gap in gears... although those gaps keep getting smaller now that a 1x12 is a thing.

Just a wild guess, but maybe it’s because of the difference in distances. Women’s course is less than half the distance of the men. And, I suppose that’d also mean less elevation gain.

Start: Women’s – Denain; Men’s – Compiègne, north of Paris
Finish: Vélodrome André-Pétrieux, Roubaix
Distance: Women’s – 125km; Men’s – 257.5km
Cobbles: Women’s – 17 secteurs of pavé covering 29.2km; Men’s – 30 secteurs of pavé covering 54.8km;

Interesting observations. Here's an equally wild guess: average speed for women's race is 6 km/hr slower. I'm sure there are some nuances in peak speeds that doesn't reflect, but perhaps the women's gearing can be a little narrower because the range of speeds is a bit smaller.

Elevation isn't really a think in P-R. Any idea if the women use 1x as much in races where there is some profile?

I reallydon't know. I'm not against women cycling but there's so much of the mens races to follow, it would take a huge amount of time to follow all the races for both genders.
