Late '60s - early '70s Falcon San Remo, likely a Mark II. It had many small areas of surface rust, and I was told that it wasn't the original finish so I opted to try DIY. Citrus stripper, lots of sanding, spray.bike primer and color, 2K clear coat gloss. Not perfect but not at all bad.

Bright light blue, magenta, and pink splatter over a black base and then clearcoated.
I love the paint, I was very frustrated with the 2-part clearcoat. It certainly has enough clear coatings now...I'll leave it at that.

I love the "starry night" effect of those very fine spatters! What was your technique?

Thanks! Yeah, like I mentioned- the paint came out great. Its that darn 2-part clear that was brutal. So many layers in an effort to reduce the orange peel effect in some places. I also used a lot to help smooth the naturally bumpy texture of the splatter pattern.

I used Montana Gold spray paint for the black base and the 3 colors. I took the spray caps and drilled out the small hole so its larger. That eliminates atomizing the paint. I also drilled thru the existing hole on the inside of the cap which introduces air when I spray. So the paint comes out in larger particles since the hole is bigger and air is mixing with the paint as it is pushed out of the bottle. Because I drilled thru the hole though, that hole became a place for paint to seep a bit, so there was some paint dripping down the outside of the can while I sprayed. I had a plastic sheet under everything so no big deal, but it was something that I hadnt thought of when I came up with this idea and it definitely surprised me. Gloves are good!
I would then start spraying off the tube and move the spray onto and then past the tube. I wanted the larger particles to stick and not drip, so if too much hit the tubes at once, it would probably drip. Just hundreds of little quick pushes of the cap to release small bursts of paint all around.

It was really fun.


An All City Mr Pink 10th anniversary frame was my inspiration. I then added the purple color to the other colors that are on that frame and tried to use more splatter over all.

No real tricks. I set the frame out in the sun to get it as hot as I could. I then brought it into my garage out of the sun and wind and painted it. I applied all the coats at once. Once I finished the first coat I started the second coat then third coat. Since the frame was hot it dried pretty quickly. I left it in the garage where it was warm for a few days to help it cure. I didn't do any polishing.

I was browsing FB marketplace and saw an ad for a lady giving away and "old, needs lots of work" 10 speed with terrible pictures, so I said I would take it. My thought was to fix it up and give it away, but then when I saw what it was and knew my husband would love it! He wanted to paint it himself, the paint was not salvageable ands he did. Now that we know what goes into painting a frame, NEVER AGAIN! Good experience but I will leave this to the professionals.

FWIW:

I've done this a number of times and now achieve results that rival the best professional paint jobs I've seen (not to toot my horn too much! ). It does take practice. You'll probably wreck the first frame (or two) you try. Great thing is you can always start over My advice is to use a system all from the same vendor - so, same vendor for prime/paint/clear. Personally I only use duplicolor which is an acrylic laquer. Nothing beats a properly done laquer finish IMO.

My process is:
1) take frame for sandblasting
2) thin coat of etching primer on bare metal. let 'flash off' for an hour or so (depending on conditions).
3) apply couple coats of sandable primer. depending on how well the primer went on ill let it flash off for a couple hours then start painting. if there are imperfections in the primer I'll let it dry 24 hours then do a light wet sand.
4) apply laquer. this takes practice. i'll typically apply 9-10 coats building up progressively thicker. sometimes more.
5) let laquer fully cure for ~10 days.
6) wet sand/polish.
7) use the best clear coat you're comfortable using. really like Duplicolor 1K which is urethane based. If you know what you're doing the best clear is a 2K but highly toxic.
8) after clear has fully cured wet sand/polish (if necessary often is not).
9) enjoy!
Tip: ALWAYS follow directions from manufacturer on how/when to use their system.

Takes practice, time and patience but it's something I really enjoy. Once you get good at it you can achieve pro level finishes. Good luck!

NOTE - I only paint steel frames. Process, as mentioned above, has some caveats for aluminum.
Double Note - get a proper respirator to save lungs.
