NBD Shake down ride
Well shake down ride of the new Trek didn't go as planned. Rides nice, but about 17 mi in, blew out the rear tire, completely delaminating the tire. I stopped immediately, as it sounded as if a shotgun had gone off, so I don't think the damage was from riding flat. Just wondering, when I'm looking at older tires, what can I look for so I don't have this again. Or is it just safer to replace tires on any bike 10 years or older.

I won't say that I haven't ridden 10 yo tires, but I wouldn't put them on a new build.

Reminds me of a commute home several years ago....
I was riding a fixed gear and was coming up on a stop light. The city had just painted new sharrows on the street and I didn't realize they had textured the **** out of the paint. I could feel it grabbing at the tire as I skidded over the area, but didn't think about it. After I got home and stashed my bike in the garage, as soon as I closed the door I heard the tire blow. Of course tired and drunk at 9pm, I drop to the grass and listen for another shot. When I finally got up and went into the garage, I discovered I'd worn a huge patch of the tire down to the threads that blew out. I don't know how I rode 3m on it from where I'd skidded it.

10 year old tires are fine----when you are doing the Clunker Challenge and you are not descending during any part of your 100k.

Had a tire wear out in the middle of the season, so a grabbed a spare of unknown vintage from the "emergency" pile.
Went for a forty mile ride and when I got home I noticed this:

If there is cracking in the tread, then replace the tires. That is an obvious sign to me.
Oh, and if you slide those brake levers down on the bars, you will be able to brake from the hoods and drops.

Yeah, I noticed the brake levers too high as soon as I got on. It is on the list of winter things to do.
