Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

6/6 for me. Had a chilly but good early ride. Now I have to go work a few hours at our “Sunday walk-in” office which is not even my office but it’s a cooperative effort by my whole group, I got guilted into volunteering.

My hope is with sunny weather and the Eagles game, patient volume will be light.

Me neither. Still unpacking from our move to Albany, hope to be done by Thanksgiving.

I can offer a PSA to senior citizens . . . forget about moving at that age, it's absolutely overwhelming. You just can't keep up with everything that's going on. Chaos will surely ensue. I'm never moving again, no matter what, this is the house where I will die.

Some positive aspects, it's a much flatter area than the hilly mid-Hudson Valley area where I formerly was. I can see myself cycling again this spring. Plus it's a much nicer house as well as a much smaller, more manageable property. Once we get settled it will be a slice of heaven.

If it's all on one floor, I suspect you CAN make it your last house. Really old folks sometimes end up having trouble with stairs.

I'm not even that olde, but would definitely pass on most two-story homes.

The ideal would be one with a full basement/garage you could drive into, but you could get from the garage door to the front door via a gently sloping walk.

I just finished watching game two. I knew the outcome of both games going in, but still fun to watch the entire game in a half hour.

My folks live in a 3 story Townhome. Garage/basement on lowest level. Kitchen/LR/DR and 1/2 bath on main floor. Bedrooms and bathrooms on top floor. They are getting older and REFUSE to move to an all-on-one floor place. My sister and I have been on their case for awhile about their problems going up/down the stairs, and after MUCH gnashing of teeth and wringing of hands they agreed to install stairlifts.

I might put up with front porch stairs, but that's it.

Dream porch right there, and only $70k. Unfortunately it's in AL

I’ve told this before, but my wife and I started looking for a new construction one level house with ADA halls, bathrooms and minimal steps to get in the house after our horrendous tandem accident in 2016 and we were housebound for 5 weeks and couldn’t get up and down stairs to get to laundry facilities and other necessities. Moved in to new house in Spring 2018 and my wife got to test out the new house in 2019 when she fell backwards down a set of stairs and spent 3 weeks in the hospital with 12 broken bones. New house came into its own quickly.

Our house has three steps to get into, which is good because flooding can be an issue here.

The rest of the burning got completed this morning, with the help of my lovely wife. There is one more pile I'd like to chip away at; it got too big to be burned as a unit.

I rode 53.000 feet. We should all track out rides in feet. Much more impressive.

I only climbed 6000. 14,000 just seemed like a lot, wondered where the person was riding.

Tons of stairs, from the finished basement to the attic, 3 flights of stairs. Keeps the knees from getting lazy, although the left hip has been protesting lately.

Mom and Dad's bedroom stayed upstairs until 4 years after Mom died, when at 96, Dad got his SECOND knee replaced. Mind you, Mom didn't make many trips up and down in her last years - generally down in the morning and up at night and that was it.

After the knee replacement, his dementia was taking hold, and my sisters blocked the staircase with big signs saying "Don't go upstairs! You sleep down here. Nothing you need is up there!" which MOSTLY worked, though occasionally when his daytime care worker arrived, she'd find him upstairs in his old bedroom. 50 years of habit is hard to break.

I've moved five times in the last eight years, and two more on tap - we're now going to hang out with Mom in Boulder until AG's work and the economy settle out. So that's one in spring and then one more... whenever it makes sense to leave.

Fun ride today. Ended up going about 61 miles, rather than the 59 I'd planned, because the cops had the road blocked off. Normally, it's a nice, fast, no-brakes descent where I have gotten as high as 44 mph (drafting a pickup with a camper top), but usually only get up to about 38. But that meant I not only had to go back up the descent I'd just come down, but then had to turn and go up more of a climb to get back to the road I was trying to get to. Usually by that point I'm all out of climbing legs, but it wasn't so bad. The descent after the climb would have been fun, if it weren't for the FOUR stop signs - one at the bottom of a 10% gradient.

It was cool and damp when I started out, but the sun burned away the fog while I was on the road. These two pics were taken at the same place, about 3 hours apart:

I haven't looked, but you can see it on the desktop site. From the app, it looks like it's person #6 on the mileage leaderboard, which is Dan, who was in Spain.
