Ugly bikes cannot be stolen as easily as pretty bikes? That makes no sense on several levels, but I do “consider the source.”

Time to update the iggy list.

I've never understood that logic. While I agree to an extent that a higher end bike may be more attractive to a thief than a beater given an option of the two. Anyone that leaves even a beater out may walk home some day. A meth-head usually just sees two wheels and transportation.

My issue is with the use of a form of can vs. may. The subjective attractiveness of a bike has no bearing on whether it can be stolen.

That aside, I think the ease of theft is often the driving factor. I locked my non-beater bike fitted with $400 worth of racks with a Kryptonite and thick cable outside of a popular public market that people often ride to. As I was doing so a young woman was locking up her bike with a cheap chain a padlock right next to mine. She went into the market. I walked a block to get a paper. As I was walking back to the market not even 5 minuets later I saw a tweaker-looking dude speeding away on the woman's bike. He had a small gym bag over his shoulder, which probably held his chain cutting tool(s). Had likely been casing the bike racks waiting for someone like her. I found the woman inside the market and told her what had happened. She told me she had not felt like carrying her good lock with her.

Icky!
If I felt that insecure I'd just carry a can of bear spray. I mean, why would one risk being splattered with someone elses blood? Think about it. You grapple with a stranger you can now has monkey pox!

Everything of value stays on my person/backpack. Except the pepper spray canister on the bar - which I've used once.
Bike can be replaced easier than my personal equipment.

I prefer to keep my defense items on my person in the event I'm separated from my bike.

one should stay off two wheels if they are afraid of the unknown or i guess they could ride a Peloton and hope that the video is non threatening
