Ok, so I did a little work and took some new pics. I finally found the shorter and correct GB stem so I was able to do the bar and brake lever swap I have been planning and I added the Carradice bag. New stuff is the leather saddle, new old Rando bars, brake levers with new Cane Creek hoods and bar tape and the new Carradice bag.

Nice job on the GP. Love the Honey saddle and bar wrap color against the green frame and the Carradice bag is a nice touch.

Thanks, the maiden ride with the new setup was 11 miles into work this morning and the bars and stem put me into the more upright position I was looking for. I am very pleased with the Carradice bag as well, was able to put three days worth of food in it with a little room to spare. I think it is done at this point.

Picked up a beautiful Grand Prix a few days ago.I believe it's a 72 but not sure just yet.I believe it to be all original also not positive.Took it for a quick spin last night and it rode beautiful....Going to drop it off tomorrow at my shop and let them check it over.

I just picked this one up today. I believe it's a 1973. It will be a fixie. I just need to learn a few details before get a new hub and a few other parts. I'm thinking of changing the crankset and going to 700c rims.

I have a 1974 Raleigh Professional frame set that I am building up to be a pass hunter for the steep mountains in Japan. The frame is getting repainted, probably the third time. I don't have the budget for Campy NR, and I want to have wide gearing, or plenty of low gearing. I think the Raleigh rebranded SunTour V GT looks nice and the front derailleur with the cut out circles also looks sweet. I know that many Grand Prix used them.
How does this stuff run?

I have a bunch of options with shifters and hubs that I have on hand

Is it possible to use the rear derailleur with an 8 speed Ultegra brifter with these derailleur?. I also have 9 speed Dura Ace barends, which I could use in friction mode and 6 speed Shimano barends. I have a rear wheel with a 6 speed freewheel built up and I could also build up a wheel to use an Ultegra 8 speed freehub.

I don't know how I missed thread before, I no longer have my Grand Prix, but I have been looking for another. I have yet to find one in my size, in good condition, and at a fair price.

This is my wifes GP purchased new in 1973, I think. This picture was taken in 2008. In the pic, it still has one of the original tires. It sports new tires today and for comfort, tektro brakes with a more ergo bar.


I have some 27" rims to build for improved braking, may use some extra Campagnolo HF or Mavic 501 hubs and a Suntour V Luxe RD with some nice shifters. Should make a big difference in the ride.

turns out i did get her powder coated, converted her to a portuer bike with out the front rack..

ive posted her in many posts but im very proud of the results

it looks like your crankset might have the english raleigh threading, make sure you keep the cups if you change your crank out, you may need to A, retap the the threads to standard 24tpi, B, get a Velo Orange universal BB, C. find a square taper spindle that works with your bb cups. (this is what i was able to do.. PIA)

In highschool I worked at Thompson's Boat Center down on the Potomac River in DC. There was a "Yeshua" (member of a religious cult) that came down every day to hang out. They didn't believe in having a lot of worldly possessions. They lived out of a large pack and travelled on road bikes with specially reinforced racks that could carry the weight of their packs. My Yeshua friend decided that I needed a good bike. The Yeshau's would fix up old bikes for their brethren. He scored me one of these Yeshua bikes, complete with reinforced rack. It was a silver Grand Prix and I paid $75 for it. The year was 1991. It also had bar end shifters.

I loved that bike. I took it to college and put many miles on it. Junior year I left it locked in a friends basement while I was studying abroad and when I came home it was gone. I always missed that bike. Over the years, I gradually became obsessed with finding my old bike--or at least the equivalent thereof. At first I could not figure out what model it was because I kept looking for Raleighs with bar end shifters and none matched. Finally I determined that it was mid '70s Grand Prix and the bar end shifters were an upgrade.

After months of search on Craigslist and Ebay, I scored this one this morning: a 1975 Nottingham GP. It was on ebay, but it happened to be down the road from me. So I drove down, paid cash and her she is. As far as I can tell she is totally stock except maybe the foam grips and seat. She is excellent working condition having just been tuned up and amazing garage kept condition. I doubt she has 100 miles on her. And she is virtually identical to my original bike (except the rack and shifters). I don't think she needs a thing, although I'm sure upgraditis will hit me and I will replace the seat, maybe put some old school white tape on the bars. Maybe even bar shifters one day!

Just bought this old beauty at a garage sale today. Had been looking for a good condition vintage for a long time. This appears to be a 1973 Grand Prix. Ride is fantastic. Condition is very good. I'm in love. It's my dream bike.

I knew nothing about the Raleigh Grand Prix before buying it today but have now spent hours devouring as much info as I can. Glad this forum/thread is here.

No plans to do anything fancy with it for now. Just going to ride, enjoy, and learn.

I know the feeling. That was my first purchase a few years ago, (a '74) after decades away from riding.
Lots of cleaning, polish, lube and an up-grade or two, but well worth the effort IMO....

And, I know the feeling of not riding for a while. About 10 years ago, I had just purchased a brand new Trek 820 Mountain Bike and rode it only a couple of times before I met my wife. My wife never learned how to ride a bike (a fact I hope to change very soon) so into the garage the new bike went and I took it out for a spin only about once a year. Partly because I did not want to ride for hours without her and partly because I did not really like that bike much. I wanted one like the Raleigh I now own instead.

My wife just got a new/used bike from a friend who is taking a job out of the country so, now, she can learn and we can both ride happily together.
