Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

BTW, last night I showed Mrs. GeneJockey a video on YouTube from that C&V collector who rented and renovated a space to store, display, and work on his MUCH LARGER collection of bikes. I said, "I wanted you to see this, so you will realize I'm not crazy. Look how many more bikes he has than me."

She drily replied, "Two people can both be crazy."

I tried something similiar it didn’t work. What does seem to work is convincing her each bike has a specific role that only that specific bike can fill. Soon I will run out of roles.

You guys should have been a fly on the wall when I broached the idea of buying the lot next to my office building, and constructing a building to house a car collection I wanted to start.

I'm interested in an over-the-air update if one becomes available.

I discovered the perfect cure to the desire to own and restore classic cars - watch videos on restoring classic cars. I think I described this one last month - it was a one hour YouTube video documenting a FIVE YEAR restoration project on a 1959 Austin Healy "Bug Eye" Sprite, which any sane person would have called a lost cause at the start. It really demonstrated to me just how much work it would be to get even close to a decent restoration - non of which am I competent to do!

It reminded me of a piece in Road & Track years ago, where the writer had a hankering to get a Morgan to restore. He described going to see one for $4500 nearby. Everything needed to be replaced, or rebuilt, but the seller would say, "Yep. You can get a new one of those from (vendor name)". At the end, the seller asked what he thought, and the writer said, "Everything on it needs to be replaced, except the steering wheel. It's a NICE steering wheel, but it's not worth $4500."

Mrs. GJ doesn't expect my collecting to make sense to her. It didn't make sense to her when I collected watches - "But this one that looks like the other one has a different movement!", or "These 5 all have the same movement, but in different cases!" - but it made sense to me. And all the bikes in my collection make sense TO ME. Each one has something unique about it that made me want it, with the possible exception of the second Lotus.

The ol' Milwaukee Road bridge over the mighty Columbia River at Beverly is almost ready for pedestrians and cyclists. I sure hope the stars align such that I can ride the Palouse to Cascades trail from Seattle to Idaho (or vice versa) this summer.

Took a most of a day for an engineer, the window crew leader, who did most of the work, and maybe another half a man. I’m guessing 3 boat units. You should see my kitchen now.

I agree, the classic car route is just too expensive and labor intensive. I was more interested in late model stuff. But, alas . . ..

Besides, $3.25 is essentially free, with inflation.

I worked with a guy who has a collection of cars and trucks including three 1941 Chevys, some mid 60s trucks and some post war cars, about 12 in all. He's not a mechanic (he works in parts) but he trades parts and cars to get what he wants. His knowledge of collectable parts is extensive, best I've seen.

One day he bought a Chevelle, like a 68 or 69. The next week he sold it and made $5k. He wanted a better steering wheel for his 47? Chevy and found one for $2K. He sold the one he had for like $1600 and bought the cherry one. He does stuff like that all the time, some of it when he's supposed to be working.
