First outdoor ride of the year (first C&V too)

Well I had been riding my trainer about 5 days a week lately, so I had decided to take the day off, since I had a gravel ride planned for Sunday. I decided my Masi had been neglected fo too long, and Eroica CA was around the corner, so I would take it out. Exactly 7.2 miles into the ride...PFFFT, FT F, then nothing. I stopped to check and the sealant i had put into the tube seemed to be holding. went about another 200 feet and found out it was too old to work well. Needless to say, i was on my way out te door, when I had the thought "I should grab my seat bag in case I have a flat". Good thing!

After I changed the tube, Masi and I had a nice time, enjoying the late afternon sun and the 60 degree day!

I don't do the winter riding thing anymore. If winter riding was 60 degrees- that'd be great.

Today it's a balmy 28 with a 19 wind chill. Nope.

Several years ago I had all this excitement about riding- and I rode some winter ride- it looked like the streets were fine. I was on a section of path with a light dusting of snow- and my bike went out from under me- I ended up in the snowbank off to the side. Honestly- it was kinda fun. I kept riding and the same thing happened some 50 yards down... but this time I ended up on the ice- and it was decidedly less fun. A couple more of those spills and I decided to walk my bike. It took a few days or weeks or something to recover from that.

I'm too old for that ****.

Wind chills of -20°F yesterday. 12°F right now. Didn't get the blizzard that you New Englanders got, but has been a bitter cold January in my little chunk of PA.

You guys brought the heat in the Show Your Race Iron thread. Appreciate that!

Not riding sucks.

I’m just shy of 800 miles for January most of it below freezing. And few days on sloppy snow covered roads. Im starting to be known as that crazy bike nut

Winter here is time to do winter stuff. The cold and lack of snow hasn't helped XC skiing locally but has made for good ice conditions and putting some fillets in the freezer.

My wife lobbied for a Nordictrak bike with the 22" screen. I put Keos on it and bought her proper bike shoes. She is doing really well and it showed the one time it was warm enough to go out for a ride. She likes hills! She also wants to go places and ride. A big turn around. Still can't get her to accept my bike OCD activities.

A friend, who can't ride any more due to neck injury, sold me her bike for my wife, not C&V. It may be a bit small, but she likes it as of the first ride.

I digress, I have been riding the Nordictrak but not as often as she has. I am anxious for warmer weather, anything over high 40's works well for me.

My only problem riding in coldish weather is trying to keep my hands at least somewhat warm. (Tullio Campagnolo purportedly had the same problem, leading to his invention of the modern cam-actuated quick release hub retention system.)

Others with primary Raynaud's syndrome -- what type of cycling gloves do you use? I wear Proviz full finger gloves year-round for cycling.

You can drop a lot of cash on an ice house. I catch just fine in my $30 solo flip over.

I really like this picture. I grew up near there, so this looks like quintessential Central CA to me -- flat earth, bluish grey sky, irrigation canal. Beautiful bike, too.

i can get the problem in cold weather but I don’t wear any kind of special gloves. Usually I just wear more glove than most would for a given temp. I’ll wear thinner full finger gloves up into the low 60’s. I’d think lobster claw gloves or mittens might theoretically be the best as it would let your soldiers work together to fight the cold but really if I’m going out in near freezing weather I put one of those hot hands thingys in each glove.
