1971 Raleigh Sports saddle question

My Raleigh Sports has a black , vinyl I think , saddle. It has no markings on it, I thought it was original, but looking on epay today there was exact same saddle with a Schwinn tag on it. Could this still be original to the bike ? The bike even had original tires when I bought it.

Its a comfortable saddle, although it will bottom out on large bumps . Thanks ,Dave

The catalog lists a brook b72 for sports and b66 for superbe. Brooks b72 probably for yours.

Brooks did make vinyl saddles, and it is possible yours in an original. From what I see on line, the Deluxe version of the Raleigh Sports had Brooks leather saddles. The Standard version most likely came with the vinyl saddle as a cost reduction. I have a Raleigh Sprite that has a Brooks vinyl saddle as can be seen here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/stl914/...7622653476718/

Follow this link to see if your saddle is among those pictured:

That bike just begs for a leather Brooks saddle.

It does.
"Back when" we had a pile of take-off Wright and Brooks saddles from customer's new English bikes w/ gushy vinyl butt perches installed instead since the OEM Brit leather didn't look as "comfy" as mom's sofa. Go figure.....

That is quite true- I've heard that shops sometimes swapped in thick, vinyl saddles because they looked more comfortable to people walking into the shop and just wanting a bike to cruise around on. The catalogs from that time spec a B72, but it's always possible a swap at the shop took place. I once had a Sports where that was the case.

We charged extra for the swap to cover our costs.
Those OEM Wright & Brooks saddle piled up in the back room and probably have never been used.......
The customer got what they wanted, if lucky it was a Brooks vinyl or a Schwinn Approved.

And those old AW Sports are still getting it done. Rock on, and give 'er a drop of oil once in awhile.

I have a 1970's Sports Standard and it did come with the Brooks vinyl saddle, as did quite a few other bikes in the line up from that era. The regular Sports had the B-72, the Superbe a B-66. I like the vinyl saddle for short rides and if the bike is going to parked outside much. FWIW the one on my Sports Standard has survived many years of commuting and being parked at bike racks outside, it does have a couple of small splits at the seams.

I picked this Raleigh Sports up last Summer. The bicycle was, virtually, unridden and in mint condition. This is the saddle that was fitted to the bike...

I should add that this Sports is a bit newer than the one the OP speaks of. I should also mention that I have one or two of them put away, if interested.

since this bike is a Superbe / Sports , maybe the B66 is best. My saddle and handlebars are about even.

I had the Dyno Hub for awhile, then found a local seller with the rack and extra front wheel so had the Dyno laced up. Then found the S.A. light set . The headlight has chrome pitting ,but the orig wiring was all there. My bell is not S.A. but is an old Bevin 'Gem' made in USA. Trying to keep it period correct.
