Performance Bike
Love my Fuji Transonic, came with almost full Ultegra r8000 and can be had pretty cheap since Performance is going out of business. But it rides great, shifts great, and the direct mount brakes are fantastic. Upgrade the crank for $200 (which I did), and you've got a full Ultegra carbon aero bike for less than most people pay for a set of wheels.
Never owned a carbon bike before, and after putting some miles on it, I don't want to ride anything else. I owned an aluminum Fuji a while back too. Didn't have any complaints. 👍

high quality steel or aluminum is gonna ride better than cheap carbon, a cheaper upgrade would be getting a good carbon fork and seatpost

I like my Trek Emonda ALR5. 105 groupset and within your price range.
The frame is as light or even lighter than many low/mid range carbon and it rides great.
The stock wheels are heavy but everything else is good.

Go to competitive cyclists website and check out the 1500 buck Ridley Fenix they'selling.
I ride the same frame, and there's nothing "cheap carbon" about it.

For 1500$ you can get a Defy Adv. 1 or a TCR Adv. 1 (Mechanical Ultegra groupset on both).
