Wasn't really feeling the ride this morning. Slow, distracted, my thoughts going every which way. I'd kinda planned to Ride My Age, what with it being my birthday and all, but the legs and the head were saying "You don't need to do 64 miles. You already did that several times this year." I was leaning toward just doing 55 miles. Then I got to the turn-off where one way makes it 55 and the other makes it 65. I took the latter, and the mind and the legs seemed to start waking up. I was more focused, and pushing harder I practically TT'd the 8 miles on the Alameda from Los Altos to Palo Alto, even though I hit EVERY GODDAM RED LIGHT the whole way. It wasn't one of those days when you feel like a Cycling God, but you know, it was pretty good anyway.

I don't know about you, because I can't see into your head (thank god), but for me, it's like there are two parts to my mind when riding. One focuses on the riding - speed and effort and not running into things - while the other wanders, but generally stays with a theme or an issue, or something. Today, it was like that part couldn't settle down, and kept distracting the 'focused on riding' part, so I'd find myself tooling along at 12 mph in a place where I generally go more like 15.
Not sure how to describe it other than that - my mind wouldn't settle and let the riding part do its job the usual way. I can see the effect in my HR trace on Strava - the 16 miles before the turnoff, my HR averaged 115. The 22 miles after the turnoff, it averaged 130.

Not a lot of CPU usage required for Velo Vol cycling, save for traffic monitoring.
