Titanium Campagnolo bits part 1

****SOLD****So pricing for this stuff is all over the place, so i went by what has sold on the Bay and adjusted where i thought it was appropriate.
all prices are for the item only and shipping will be extra, but as they are Light parts and smallish they shouldn't be bad on shipping.

First up is what i beleive to be a Campagnolo Titanium Bottom Bracket version 2, this came off a Team Raleigh and looked to have low usage, the grease is likely old so will need to be serviced, the bearings are of unknown
condition, with servicing they could be ok. the aluminum cups deformed a little as they were hard to remove, i did not try to dress the deformity as i wanted it to be as shown,
i believe the look could be improved with some careful filing and polishing.$150.00 plus shipping.

open to reasonable offers.

Titanium is not attracted to magnets. It is unlike steel in this way.

Got a magnet? Does the magnet stick to the spindle? If it does, it is not titanium.

This test does not preclude it being some form of stainless steel, many of which are non-magnetic.

But, if the magnet sticks, it is not titanium.

Is there doubt that this is not what it is said to be? I thought the protruding spindle/use of nuts to secure cranks and the press-on bearing races were strong indicators this is represented correctly.

The only Campagnolo stud-type (as opposed to bolt-type) spindle was the titanium Super Record version 2 spindle.

Yes, the stud-type spindle is definitive for Super Record, but pressed on races are not. There was a "CON SFERE DA 3/16" steel bottom bracket with pressed races, but it was a bolt-type spindle, not nut-type.

The OP seemed to have some doubt, "First up is what i beleive to be a Campagnolo Titanium Bottom Bracket version 2,".

the 68-ss is the convention post CPSC. Not everyone is keenly versed on the Campagnolo details.

The Nut fixation was part of the strengthening of the spindle too, the earlier version (slightly narrower) was also hollow clear through.
It flexed more.

I stated "what i believe to be" because i don't consider myself an expert on all things cycling, and i don't want to misrepresent in anyway.
from the research available to me i still believe it is a Titanium super record BB.

Not only did it flex more, it left Laurent in the lurch! He lost the 1982 Paris-Tours race because of this. He had a substantial lead and a tailwind when his BB broke. This pic says it all.

The OP's BB won't, because it's solid. Legend has it that Laurent Fignon's high-profile crash, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, is why Campag changed from hollow to solid, but I don't know if that's true.

Fignon crashed due to a broken titanium spindle while leading Blois-Chaville. Looks painful.

Definitely a Black eye Day for Campagnolo there.
The shop I worked for rarely sold Super Record bottom brackets, this was during the initial design period.
Sold Lots of the Super Record headsets.
We did install a bunch of Teledyne ti spindles and fastening bolts, they were solid at the central portion. Retained the use of 1/4" ball bearings.
The smart call on those was to install the cranks with steel bolts then remove them and install the ti fasteners to retain the cranks.

Many Super Record spec'ed bikes came with steel Nuovo Record bottom brackets and steel-spindle Superleggero pedals. IIRC, Campagnolo USA marketed this as the "Super Record Pro" group.

That's what I do with my Zeus 2000 titanium crank mounting bolts. Also applies to the weight-weenie aluminum Arnold Industries crank mounting bolts.

our local distributor called it "Super Record Reduced". Pro does sound better.
Very soon though, Campagnolo got beat up by Shimano 7400 SIS.
Then came 7 cogs... The acceptance of the freehub
followed by 8 speed and the integrated brake and shift levers.... I thought moving the entire lever to the side to shift was awkward, but could not fault the ability to shift under load and keep one's hands on the bars.

Fignon crashing in Blois-Chaville.
"And I don't think I can ever recall such a thing happening."

I suspect many riders in the pro circuit back then was riding with Ti spindled Campy BBs.
Fignon was just the unlucky one to might have gotten the one with a machining flaw on it that developed into a crack.....
