I am always busy restoring bikes for the Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange located in Palo Alto Ca. (plug- we have lots of used bikes for sale at competitive prices ) . A few of the recent ones include a beautiful yellow Trek 360 and a Gitane mixte. This week I have been cleaning up a 1982? made in Japan Raleigh Gran Sport. This bike uses a High Ten Japanese frame and components and is nothing especially fancy . Just a well built 29.5 lb. utility bike. This example showed little use upon disassembly. No wear on the rims or brake pads. It probably spent years indoors with a few nicks and scratches from being moved here and there. Someone had installed black bars and levers and it had stem mounted shifters. I cleaned off all the accumulated grease and dirt and touched up the white paint with Rustoleum Automotive White enamel which was a very good match to the original paint. New 4" riser bars , stem, levers, and grips give it a n upright riding position . A new cushy seat , rubber reflector pedals and a Suntour 14-30 tooth freewheel give it plenty of range in the gearing and some Bontrager tires I had complete the package.

I think it makes a very appealing package. We will probably Donate it. If we put it up for sale we would probably ask $250 or so. A recent trip to the bike shop, where their cheapest new bike is $700 and the prices quickly escalate to multiple thousands of dollars make bikes like this a bargain

I spent a bit of time cleaning up this orphan this week. It is now waiting for a trip to get clear coat on all of the decals and complete frame and fork. I am hoping it shines up nicely after the clear coat. Smiles, MH

It was allegedly never ridden, so I bought it. Tires and components supported same. However: keyed headset washer was missing and the steerer was too long even with one. Remedied with a taller top nut. It has shop wear in a couple of places, but there is no sign the chainrings had ever rotated with a chain.

OEM saddle was missing, no issue.

Since the Shimano 1056 was like new, it was pulled, along with the wheels/tires. The PDG stem, post, and bars were too big, so the entire group set is bagged and ready for sale, 7-speed (cassette.)

DA was subbed in based on what was here. I wanted a compact crankset, but I had no 50T ring. 9000 crankset, 7700 post/shifters/RD/calipers. Used a Claris FD because the clamp fit, Tetra brake levers, 7403 hub set with Matrix ISO-C II’s, Vittorias. I have a 7700 FD and clamp adapter, but I like that Claris mech.

No colors match so I didn’t even try, I used stuff on hand only. I’ll ride it on flat centuries and a couple shootouts, see how it goes.

Just bought this frameset. The crank bearings and headset seem excellent. I will set it up well enough to ride so I can evaluate. I think it's a 531 db 3 tubes. The rest is probably hi ten but these Motos always feel so good to me. I love the patina and wanted to go up a bit in size, plus it was 75$ and I got to visit cedar rapids bohemian district!

Well, I'm still hacking away at the old Raleigh Team USA. Sourced matching red and blue paint and have been doing touch ups. Got hoods in for the Superbe brake levers and this morning am hoping to sort out mismatched colored O-rings on the brake adjusters. Gonna see how well a 130mm rear wheel fits without actually cold setting it. Just debating using an old tubular setup I have on hand. New bars, stem,, seatpost, and saddle put on as I mocked it up.




I also swapped on some carbon fiber brake pads and then mounted some old Reynolds DV46 wheels on the old Calfee. Snowing today so I'll be messing with the bikes vs riding them today.

Been wrenching on a 1995 DBR Vertex MTB today. Got some vintage correct half clip pedals on the bike and correct looking vintage saddle on the bike. Took it for a short ride decided I hate the grip shifts with short chopped bars and short pull linear brakes someone put on the bike tends to shift when you brake.



It does look good in the wild.

Put together the truing stand from the Musson book with wood scraps I had lying around from various other projects. Now I can finish up the wheels for my PX10 project!

Hi there, I’m a gcse student currently finishing off my design and technology coursework and I would be so grateful if anyone would give me some feedback on some of my rough design ideas and final design as including feedback from others gets me in the top marking bracket. Most of the designs are bicycle related (hence why I’m on this forum), and just stating what you like and dislike about a design would be so useful.

Moveable. The tall angled piece is for checking radial true, though I'm not sure it's actually necessary- seems like the smaller block would be sufficient... But I had the wood and it looks kinda cool, so I made it anyway (this is my first set of wheels and I haven't digested the section in the Musson book on radial truing, so maybe this part is necessary.....). I was on the verge of buying a (cheapish...) stand when I came across the book and this design. I knew I could scrounge up what I needed to make it from my shed and I think it looks kinda cool, so out came the tools....

It getting to be that time of year, I'm always early on this, late doesn't cut it when having the garden. This was all weeded and I'll weed again and plant next weekend.




I keep a year round patch of Mustard, Arugula, onions, chives and garlic. The rhubarb is sprouted, my regular plantings are lettuces, spinach, squash, tomatoes. I do plant broccoli and cauliflower but those need more attention from the pests.

On the bike front my bought, sold and re-bought Univega Gran Premio gets all Suntour upgrades. Just needs the chain.

Suntour Cyclone 7000 XC Sport with Alpha 3000 shifters, sanded and polished Suntour triple mounted on Superbe Pro triple bb, with Specialized hubs on Matrix rims. Aero Comp levers with Royal Gran Comp calipers. The saddle, post and headset are the only remaining original parts.

I am going to be working on the removal of a Suntour VX bottom bracket. Had an idea that my LBS could have the tool, and I was assured that they could remove "any bottom bracket" when I called them. When I took the frame to them on Saturday, they immediately began to work on it and were stymied.
Tried an adjustable pin spanner, and that didn't work. I've been looking at older threads dealing with the same issue and decided to give a Park OBW-3 a try. I'll let you know how it turns out.

That tool should work, but I would get some large washes and use them to hold the tool secure against the cup while removing. It keeps the tool from slipping while using. Smiles, MH

I've been tinkering with this Schwinn Mirada since before the Holidays. I replaced the steel rings with alloy and I had some issues with the wheels, so I used these Saturnes from the BF marketplace. Otherwise, pretty much stock.

I've spent the last year working on my 1989 Cinelli Super Corsa with all Dura Ace 7700/7400 components (including stem and seat post) (Yeah, I know, sacrilege, but in 1996, Campy just wasn't up to it). The only part not Dura Ace is the bottom bracket--didn't want to deal with the 7700 BB headaches. I've replaced the rear 7700 steel axle with a titanium one, and have replaced just about every bolt on every part I could with either aluminum or titanium.
