Not a wacky place, just an unusual photo in fog soon after sunrise when my touring partner was in front of me on the road.



It was in Everglades National Park, it got absurdly hot every day so we started as soon as we could see in the morning to get an early start.

I suggested he use a taillight, but he chose not to. I had two taillights in bright flash mode. But almost no traffic on the road and all traffic was going slow. So it was not as bad a hazard as it looks.

Many hand-held. Some in a U-Shape to hide the selfie stick somewhat. A few bicycle mounts.

I have always tried to figure out how to put one on the chain stay on the non drive side in the rear looking forward but never really did much to try. I always thought it would be cool to see that perspective.

Wackiest place I mounted a camera was the head tube on my Univega. It interfered with the exposed front canti brake cable on tight turns. Seemed okay but I didn't test it well enough. Fortunately the wheel locked up at slow speed before I'd traveled 20 yards from my parking lot. Could have been worse.

I've mounted the camera reversed on my helmet for alternative videos in group rides. Nothing too unusual.

My camera came with a vehicle mount kit too. That was useful for mounting at odd angles on the rear rack. The big suction cup didn't stick to anything on the bike, but it gave a big foot for lashing it with bungees, velcro straps and zip ties. Not practical for routine use.

oh I've actually seen that angle from 1 or maybe 2 BF'ers. Great to see how ppl clip in & out of cleated shoes/pedals. I think one of those posters is Joey? Id have to do some digging to find the vid I'm thinking of riding in NYC traffic!

That looks like a pretty neat setup. Handlebar real estate is always a matter of priorities, and even the camera mounts that go on the underside of a K-edge or similar interfere with cables & what-not.

I like it.

Even though the footage looks great, I won't be wearing a chest mounted gimbal anytime soon.

The Nut-R in post number 9 will do this.

It replaces the end cap on the skewer and can be placed at the rear of the bike facing forward. The QR lever can be moved to the drive side. I've ridden that way and didn't die.

WOW the Nut-R one is pretty spendy...I have the original gopro from way back and it works awesome but that mount is more than 1/2 of what I paid for the camera....I will keep looking to see if I can find something a bit more economical.

The potential injuries from a chest mounted gimbal, especially on hard pavement, might also be amazing.

I've cracked my sternum and rib cage before, it hurts like hell.

Why on earth would anybody choose not to add a margin of safety especially during foggy conditions? I guess your friend hasn't had the pleasure of meeting an SUV head on yet? I suppose that's his choice? As for me, I look for all the safety equipment I can get.

You don't need one if you're on smooth surface, or even better, have a camera with electronic stabilization. The chest mount is the most stable place to position your camera (your body makes a great stabilizer) otherwise.This guy had a few good points but uses too many superlative: There is no "never" in video. For one, he said never use auto, however, auto is fine under neutral conditions and when you don't have time, can't or don't want to correct footage in post.

He made one indisputable truth that stood out however, when he said place the camera: where the action is. The chest mount is a good general position for stability especially without a gimbal or electronic stabilization.

Have used the strips of an old tube trick for many years(close to 10), on many bikes(Fuji Newest 1.0,
Scott CR1 Pro, various year Bromptons, Bike Friday pakiTs, etc.) and various areas of the bike(top tube,
fork, rear triangle, helmet, headtube, seatpost, etc.) - haven't lost a camera yet.
