Children can be so cruel!
Out riding on the MUP today, nice and sunny, warm and feeling real good since temps have allowed me to ride more often. While passing by an oncoming mother and child I can see the eyes of the child get that wide excited look and then he points and yells "look Mom, a skateboarder"!
I'm crestfallen, I'd already passed that skateboarder twice and never during the minute or so that they were in my view did they get on the skateboard. They were just carrying it around. They weren't even dressed in more typical skateboarder attire. While I was decked out in my best kit and had even just cleaned my bike!
Oh well.

You were so slow that it took you two times to pass “they” carrying a skateboard?

The child was obviously raised by wolves. May your ego heal quickly and your bike stay clean.

Skateboarders are infinitely cooler than cyclists. Runners, too. Hoverboard riders, people standing in line at a taco truck, people working in a taco truck, and people driving cars with the drivers-side window rolled down are more hip. We're nowhere near as stylish as curlers. The barber taking a smoke break outside the barber shop has more going on than us.
Arguably we're more cool than people bowling and throwing lawn darts - but they have beer close at hand.
If you wanna be one of the cool kids, pick another sport.

Skateboard hasn't been cool since the 80's. It's so boring to watch them trying to land some flippy trick that looks like every other flippy trick, and they never land it anyway. 80's vert skating was pure style.
As soon as big pants, small wheels, and hip-hop came on the scene, I was out.

Seriously? We're going to pick on OP for using a gender neutral pronoun?
I'll do this one preemptively-- why does "they" trigger you guys so much?

We use "they" as singular all the time, the awkward part is the linking verb ("is" vs. "are"). We is open to suggestion, but I don't think ridiculing people for using " they" is a good solution.
For whatever humorless pedants might be reading this, please don't bother correcting me for the "We is".

What triggers me is people who are afraid of using words " man or boy " and words " women or girl" because they have been brainwashed into believing that there is no difference between the two biologically and psychologically different sexes....Another thing that triggers me is cyclists who fret and feel butthurt because some little child failed to use proper cycling specific jargon to complement their flamboyant spandex costume and shiny clean bike.

Wait 'til that kid gets a few years, discovers bikes and thinks, "Damn, I should have paid more attention back then."

And your gender panic surfaces yet again. Why are you so threatened by this?
Nice to see how many fronts you're fighting your reactionary culture war on, btw.

My best kid encounter story was when I was pedaling very slowly behind a kid and mother on a greenway, and politely announced I was going to pass. The kid was about 3 and said " mom, we have to watch out for the crazy bicyclist!" Mom looked absolutely mortified and said looking at me "they're not all crazy" and seemed to be relieved that I saw the humor in the situation.

Our language lacks a personal pronoun for cases in which we are referencing a generic individual-- generic because we're not talking about a specific person, or because we don't know the person's gender. It's a language problem, not an issue of gender roles.
And of course the lack of a gender-neutral personal pronoun is also a problem regarding non-binary individuals.

My 1st or 2nd grade teacher back in the mid sixties pointed out the lack of a gender neutral pronoun and that the use of they or their is perfectly acceptable.
So it's not like anyone has recently discovered this lacking part of our English language. Mostly I think it's just from those that only moderately understand the English language and can only fathom they and their as plurals instead of the ability of those words to also refer to a singular person.

I've looked absolutely mortified too when my kids were that age and repeated the stupid or shameful things I've said about others. Sometimes directly to those I was referring too.

Oh, no question, every parent recognizes that moment. The mom and I had an exchange of laughs over it.

The bigger problem is that most of the derogatory pronouns are not gender neutral. As soon as you refer to a ****, a *********, or an ******* it identifies the subject of scorn as male or female. The English language needs a really vile, repulsive pronoun that can be used to insult someone, while still be respectful of gender identity issues.
