Replacing Old Suntour XCM Crankset

Hi, I have a 1989 Schwinn Impact MTB, and a very experienced mechanic who's worked on bikes for 30+ years tells me it's time to replace the crankset. I want to keep the vintage "silver" look.

Can I replace my old Suntour XCM 170mm 48-38-28 triple with either
  • a new Stronglight 170mm 48-38-28 or
  • a new Sugino XD2-500T 170mm 48-36-26?
No issues if I do this, right?

Do you need the whole crankset or just rings? Rings might be cheaper.

Chain line might shift and sometimes a spec BB will be needed. Andy

Possibly rivet rings?

My mechanic referred to bearings, so yes, maybe the BB taper.

At our bike Co-op, we sell replacement bottom bracket spindles and a complement of balls for $5. For someone good, refreshing the bottom bracket is a 30 minute job. In the unlikely event that the cups are pitted, that would cost you another $5.

If it is the bearings, it’s simple to replace the bottom bracket and keep the crankset. But maybe there’s more to the story if an experienced mechanic recommended a new crankset too.
