Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

That's pretty obscene when you think about it. "Let's let them kill themselves, if need be, for our increased entertainment. The fireball on that last crash wasn't exciting at all."

I picked a great two days to go car camping. Hope to take a ride tomorrow out to the bay to look for birds and horseshoe crabs mating. Don’t think I’ll be building any campfires.

Club ride turnout continues to increase but there is a group which is starting around the corner from the usual start site. I went to the main start where many were doing the 94 mile route and I decided to start with them and then maybe join the shorter route riders at the first stop as both routes had the same scheduled stop. The pace was too high for me after the first several hills even though they kept waiting for the stragglers and encouraged me to do the 94. At the first rest stop the B group didn't show up. Never spoke to them as they started away from us.

I decided to ride with the A group a little longer to see how I felt, and after some more climbing/chasing I started thinking about just riding back alone at my own pace. At the bottom of a long descent there was a guy who had been with the B group and he got separated and told me they were back up the hill somewhere and had not made a stop. He roared off to look for them and I told the A group I was going to go, too, which earned booing, name calling, and goodbyes from them. I caught the other group after a couple miles but never saw the other chaser again.

Then, of course, the faster riders there wanted to hammer and blew the group apart. This required waiting and phone calls to the lost but eventually everyone made it to their food stop. Naturally, I ate again despite having snacked at the stop with the other group. The slower members wanted to let the hammerheads go so I stayed back to cruise the last 25 miles with them. When the headwind started I went to the front to try and pull them but it seemed they didn't know what I was doing. Finally one of the women got on my wheel. When the last 3 mile climb came, one of them stopped. I went back to see if she was ok. She said she was recovering from back surgery and taking medication for other issues. Also, she is 65 and hasn't been riding a lot since her back problems started. A very tough woman! She was cheerful and after some stretching we made the slow crawl up the hill. The others were waiting at the summit and we cruised to the finish together, except for the time an e-scooter passed us and I just couldn't take it and had to chase him down and drop his ass.

Oops - guess I shoulda checked the StreetView on today's hastily made road cyclin' route. I had about 5 miles of this, which was fun and shady, but not exactly in the R3's wheelhouse.

Speaking of cicadas, we don't have any here in the northwest metro Atlanta area. I also don't remember any in 2004, 1987 or 1970. I wasn't around in 1953.
I guess I'm lucky/unlucky depending on your point of view.

Kudos. I did almost a mile of gravel on 23s today. Loved every minute of it!

Enjoy the game. I think it is a requirement to enjoy a frosty mug of beer while you watch..

I have to cut one of my many lawns and take a nap.

If you'd been on pavement that mile would have been like 30 seconds less.
