Stans Crest S1
Looking at a bike (Jamis Renegade) I notice it comes with the Stans Crest S1 wheels. I noticed the 32 spoke which seemed like a good thing for stock wheels, then I checked the website and I notice they are only rated for a rider weight of 190 lb.? The Grail, the narrower wheel from Stans, is rated for 250 lb. Any know why the Crest is rated so much lower (I am 180 on a good day, not including bike weight)?

The Crest and Grail rims weigh about the same, but the Crest has a depth of 17.2mm and the Grail rim depth is 24.5mm. Basically the same amount of material but the Grail is narrower and deeper. All things being the same a narrower and deeper rim makes a stronger wheel, I think.
edit: they don't weigh about the same - 380g for the Crest, 440g for the Grail. The Grail is simply a stronger rim.

I don't have an answer for your question, but I'm surprised that Jamis would spec a wheel on their gravel bike with such a low weight limit.
I'm also confused as to how a 32 spoke wheel can only be good for 190lbs. For comparison, HED Ardennes RA Performance is 18/24 spokes laced 2x and HED lists the max rider weight as 110kg (242.5lbs).
I get that there's more to wheel building and wheel strength than spoke count, but I would be a little concerned about that setup if I were 180lb+.

What you are saying makes sense - narrower/deeper seems like it would be stronger than wider/shallower. The Grail MK3 (the alloy version) has a rider weight limit of 230lbs.
I'm also wondering if Stans is anticipating use a bit, and because the Crest is marketed as an MTB rim they're assuming most users will be riding in tougher conditions than a road/gravel wheel, therefore a lower weight limit?

I have no idea why the Crest has such a low weight limit. Stans had a rim/wheelset a handful of years ago called the Iron Cross that cited a pretty low weight limit too.
There is just no upside in my view of riding wheels with a weight limit that isnt even 200#. Thats especially true with the Crest S1 that is linked in the first post because its a $500 wheelset that weighs 1800g. A handbuilt wheelset weighing less than 1800g can be had from prowheelbuilder with butted spokes for less than $500 and not have a weight limit of 190#.

I weigh 140 and have the Crests. That’s my naked and hungry weight btw.
In order to get a relatively wide rim in aluminum that light, it’s got to be thin. The max PSI recommendation is real. I blew a tire off once because of that.
Other than that, they really are pretty strong. I’m using competition DB spokes front and rear, drive and non. Two summers ago I used them on my hardtail MTB with great results. Since January they’ve been on my gravel bike. Most recently I bombed them down some mountain passes that a gravel bike just doesn’t belong. The rear has a couple mm of wobble, the front is still true. They’ve honestly been great.
Since I did the build myself, I do wish I’d used a Bitex rear hub. It’s a better option for similar money.
If I weighed 50 more pounds, maybe the whole thing would explode.
