Yikes. 37 mph avg. over the last 1000m?!?!? That's what I can sprint on a good day. I can't imagine sustaining that for 10 seconds, much less 60. Insane.

If that kid can climb they're in Big Trouble in those Grand Tours. And if he can't he'll crush them in the TTs and Spring Classics. Looking forward to a new Phinney on the Podium. How great is that going to be?

Give that kind of speed is a little easier in a indoor Velodrome but there still aren't many people that could even come close.

Oh yeah he ran me over in a crash at Tour De Al'bitibi 07, a 17-18 year old person stage race in Val'dor Quebec.

The kid is knocking on the door of breaking the "new bike rules" World Record, and you say that kind of speed is easy?
You must hang with Michael Phelps and smoke a lot of herb to be that delusional.

It truly incredible that he was able to average 37mph on a velodrome, but averaging 37mph out on the road would be the most spectacular thing that any human has ever done. There's a reason why pretty much all cycling speed records are done indoors.

....yeah....'cause it's easy to ride fast indoors. That's why they're called records.

I really don't understand how Phinney is being talked up as a future GT contender. The kid is HUGE. I mean, never say never, he really is a phenom, but the conventional wisdom would be to see him as a future giant for classics, TTs and/or sprints. Honestly, an American who is able to clean up at the big spring classics, especially P-R and Flanders or MSR would be every bit as much of a revelation as another American tour winner.

M. Indurain was also huge. He won a race or two. You never know.

Stay tuned.

I would agree that an American hammering the classics would be a great thing to bring more awareness in the US of the other great races in Europe. That Versus TV coverage the past few years has been a revelation to me. Really enjoying watching races like Milan-San Remo, Paris Roubaix and Flanders on TV.

I've always seen him more as a Boonen type....without the nose candy.

The kid is 17 or 18. Maybe you should avoid pigeon holing him until after he's old enough to buy a pitcher of beers.

18, I think. I was profoundly creeped out when he said that Lance was such a cool dude, they were talking about girls. Though I guess they are interested in women of about the same age.

"The Kid" qualifies first in 4:15.160 in Individual Pursuit at 2009 Worlds....yawn, another American record.

CHA-CHING!

You're nuts if you don't think he's got some headroom in there too. Once he figures out how to pace himself he will be showing Wiggins a clean pair of heels at the 2009 Worlds.
