Moto-Gugie? Grand Record Re-Imagined
Because of gugie and AndyK , I have been experimenting with 650b bikes a bit for the last four or five years. I have restored a few including the 1951 Helyett, 1957 Peugeot PL-50, and 1964 Peugeot PX-50. The Helyett is gear limited and the Peugeots are a bit on the heavy side. It seems real constructor bikes like a Herse, Singer, or Routens cost as much as a decent used car.
So, I bought a 21 inch circa 73 Motobecane Grand Record and built it up with 650b wheels and Mafac Raid brakes. The bike worked pretty well, and I used it as a gravel bike here in Durango, but the 21 inch frame was more racer fit than French fit. So, I bought a circa 1973 23 inch Grand Record frame, and moved the parts over from the smaller frame. The 23 inch frame didn’t feel as nimble as the 21 inch frame, but it worked pretty well too.
This spring, I sent the frame off to Gugie for his conversion. Gugie re-raked the fork, added lots of braze-ons including canti-lever bosses, made new brake and chain stay bridges that are fender friendly, and made a beautiful front rack.
I got the frame back a few months ago and had it powder coated light blue. Then I painted the head lugs, hand painted the lug lining, and had another go at some box lining/pinstripes. I also painted some blue stripes on the fenders. I wanted to build it will all French components, but the Simplex derailleurs I had weren’t working well. So, I went with some period Campy that I had on hand and they shift fine. I might still try to find some French derailleurs. I wanted it to look like something that could have been built in the 1970s, and captures the classic French constructor spirit. I want to add some mud flaps, but it is finished for now.
Winter is in full swing here in Durango with lots of snow. I took a few pictures between snow falls this afternoon. Weight as shown is 27 pounds.
When I can finally take it out for a ride, I will have some French accordion music playing from the handlebar bag.......

3 coats of shellac on the Newbaums tape.
How about that front rack?

I had the frame and fork powder coated in Cortez Colorado. I hand painted the lugs, lug lining, box lining, and pin striping. The decals came from a couple of sources, but mostly Greg Softley from Cyclomundo in Oz.

I love this build. A couple years ago i had Gugie braze on some cantilever bosses onto my '75 Grand Record frame in anticipation of my all-French randonneur Motobecane. I haven't gotten very far but I do have most of the French parts I need to complete this build. Just need to get it painted and start building. You have given me the spark to rekindle the flame of this project, so hopefully, I can make progress over the winter and be ready by spring.

My Grand Record was my first experience with Gugificazione. He tried to talk me into the "full Gugie" treatment, but I just went with a handful of braze-ons. Over the next few years I came to understand that he was right and went further with the Grand Jubilé, although @gugie keeps adding to his bag of tricks so I don't think what I did there is "full Gugie" anymore.
You did a fantastic job with the lugs and the box lining. And of course your choice of components is always tasteful, beautiful, and functional.
