Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Nope, it's still hot. The good news is it kept the n00b patrols down.

Kudos!

I should just get a 1x for my normal riding here; I barely get out of my 52 these days. A 46 with an 11-28 or maaaaaybe 30 would get the job done fine.

I don't understand the appeal of a 1x for a road bike. Seems like you give up versatility and don't gain much. I've seen a few in the wild and even saw one in the mountains, but I like the wide range and even have a triple on one of my bikes.

At this point, someone usually says, "Nobody uses a 52 x 11", then someone (like me) says they do, and the original objector says, "But you don't ride it for miles on the flat" and the whole thing goes down hill.

But, yeah - I don't get the point of 1X for road bikes. It's like you trade two big chainrings in the front for a bunch more large cogs in the back. This is progress?

They're just giving you an opportunity to put that 52/11 to use.

I bought an 80 Volt cordless mower. I'm actually excited to see how it does.

Just got back from a super fun belated * ride with my Dad.

Pretty close to perfect riding weather today, if just a tad bit windy

*edit* My Dad's birthday, not mine.

Naturally.

Didn't give him the look though, I figure that would have been a little disrespectful.

Went on a 6 mile walk along the river, it’s a gravel MUP. I saw a group of 3 not very fit looking people coasting very fast on mountain bikes. Electric. I felt like yelling but bit my tongue.

You have mountains. I have rollers, and again, almost never leave the 52 as it is. Why have range I literally never use?

Is there an advantage to switching to a 1x? I mean, you'd have to spend time and money to change it over, right?
I have a 1x on the mountain bike but I don't need high gears unless I go on the road, which is almost never. It has a 11-46 cassette which is heavy.
1x makes room on a mountain bike for complex suspension systems and allows short stays with 29" wheels. Plus, front derailleurs suck in the mud.

That's what I've used the last three summers. I have a dinky yard and can mow on one battery. Mine is a Kobalt.

My daughter has one and absolutely loves it. The condo association takes care of lawn maintenance, which leaves me time for more important things. 🚵🏻

What gearing would you use if riding up it?
