Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

We've been getting a lot of rain, but it's been unusually cooperative in terms my riding schedule. Woke at 5:30, per usual, and saw that some rains had moved through. Clouds were still lingering and provided a nice sunrise -

Unfortunately, the roads were still wet, too, which means an increase in puncture likelihood, and I heard my rear tire hissing upon getting home. I'm scheduled for a sealant level check tomorrow, but my mileage rate has just about doubled in the last six weeks, so it might be that I'm actually past-due. Guess I should see to that today.

Sauerkraut is part of my childhood and a comfort food, in combination with German charcuterie. Kimchi, I can take or leave.

How does wet roads cause punctures?

I am of Pennsylvania Dutch descent, and my wife of Polish descent. Good food all around. We are both big fans of cabbage in all its forms, kimchi excluded.

Yes, even when one's age makes it a pitiful joke.

Anyway, went out and did a few long LT intervals this a.m,, which had the predicted and desired effect on the eFTP.

It's been years since I had homebrew, if I ever had it at all. Sounds like I'm missing out.

Been thinking about probiotics lately.

It makes it more likely for debris to stick to the tires, giving them more of a chance to puncture on each rotation, and the wet somehow makes it easier to cut through the rubber, though I'm not sure on the physics of it.

Big Bicycle is taking over UK!

'Fix your bike' vouchers launch, as cycling to be prescribed on NHS

A government scheme offering £50 bike repair vouchers will launch in England on Tuesday as part of plans to boost cycling and walking.

An initial 50,000 vouchers will be made available online later in the day on a first-come, first-served basis.

The prime minister also announced that access to bikes will be available on the NHS as part of the strategy.

The bump isn't real, though. eFTP decays over time and I had no power data to update it since the winter. However, that number matches my indoor 20 min estimate, so I think there's some headroom for this season.

Dropped off the car before 8, walked down the block to Whole Foods then walked home in maybe 15 minutes. I was dripping with sweat by the time I got home.

Ah, so it was gradually sinking, the further away you got from measured values, and this just brought it back up in line with expectation?

FWIW, I feel like it's not terribly easy to get good FTP figures outdoors. Around here, at least. There's always someone or something breakin' my stride and then there's enough variability in incline that it takes a lot more fussing to stay on target. This is my excuse for assuming that any FTP figures derived outside are underestimating my potential.

Wonder what a government bicycle repair voucher covers? Seems it should be part of the COVID bailout packages here.

It makes it easier for debris to get a "bite" on the tire. When I rode dirt bikes it was easier to get a flat on wet rocks than dry, at least that was the thinking.

I've recently discovered how difficult it is to ride intervals well. Surprising just how fast my heart rate drops with even the slightest decrease in incline. I tried some 20' Z3 intervals yesterday and with the longer length I also found myself getting distracted and not paying attention to what I was doing.

Yes, that's what it is.

I find outdoor efforts much easier than indoor. I think it's mainly the richer sensory feedback. Descents are obviously an issue, but I can avoid the big ones and bring up the mean power by pushing it on the uphills. I'm sure purists would be aghast, but it has real-world validity.

Well, MY mother prepared her sauerkraut with a little brown sugar and white wine with a sprinkling of caraway seeds. I think she learned that from someone in my father's family. When I was a kid I thought it was too sweet, but I like it now.
