Damaged Carbon Fiber Wheel - Unique Issue

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Damaged Carbon Fiber Wheel - Unique Issue

Good Morning All,

New to the forum. I got a welcome message from the forum saying I couldn't post any pics, hopefully i can share a google photos link. I had a really bad puncture from a foreign object, shredded the tire and apparently poked a hole directly in the center of the well of the rim, at first I thought a spoke had popped through the carbon fiber but this was not the case, so whatever I'd run over actually did the damage. My question to you is - do I need to repair it or can I just run new cloth tape over it? The damage is about 1/2" away from the nearest spoke whole.

*edit - it would not let me post a URL either. If you'd like a pic please post with your email so I can provide (and then maybe you can post the pic for me?).

Put a space somewhere obvious in the url and the forum software won't recognize it as a link.

I think the only right answer is to err on the side of caution. I'd send a picture to whoever made the rim and talk about options. I'm a risk averse kind of guy. Sorry to hear about the wheel though, that really sucks.

It's an iCan wheel, Chinese made. Doubt I'll get much of an answer from them but will attempt.

I know nothing about carbon rim's but I'm assuming that it is better on the rear than the front.

Being old I'm risk averse. I would not use it at this point. I would contact a bicycle carbon fiber repair shop and get their opinion.

I had a little experience with ICAN customer service on a purchase last year and they did reply in a timely manner.
Give them a try, if your lucky, they might give you a good discount on a replacement.
The contact I had was through the Amazon site as that is where the purchase was made.

I wouldn't ride that wheel. Those cracks can propagate and the rim could split.

The people who repair carbon frames may also be able to repair rims. Or not. I've never heard of a carbon rim repair.

Get what satisfaction you can from the vendor, but either way, ride different wheels.

I would bin that wheel rim for sure. It could be patched up, but as it’s structural and safety critical I wouldn’t risk it. I’m wondering what you ran over!

I wouldn't ride that rim anymore. Maybe ICAN will give you a replacement at a discount.

I'd be interested to ride it for a bit, then have another look at it.

We are armchair experts here. That said, I personally would not trust that rim and I expect it’s cheaper to replace vs repair.

A little bubblegum and some duct tape.. you should be set. Seriously though, I'd suggest letting Kimmo riding them for a while and letting you know how it goes.

I would have no problem riding that rim but I would seal that area with epoxy. The only load it takes is the pressure from the tube.

there’s also the lateral “spreading” load on the rim walls imposed by the inflated tire/tube, which is presumably resisted by the CF that comprises the rim bed. My concern is that the weave, having been disrupted by the punctured hole, could essentially “unzip” under load, resulting in the tire coming adrift from the rim. Slim possibility? Maybe, but I wouldn’t trust that wheel. YMMV

Yeah, my approach to risk is to flirt with the ragged edge of what you can get away with, thus familiarising myself with that terrain.

Mind you, I reckon I'd feel for a bulge at the rim with the tyre inflated before trying my luck. It's only a rear!
