Damage and/or wear must been caused by you, or happened while you were riding the bike. Patina, scratches, and general neglect doesn't count. If there's a good story behind it, all the better.

Chorus FD. This broke unexpectedly at mile 1 of a ride as soon as I tried to make a normal shift into the big ring. A friendly local BFer since hooked me up with a replacement:



Deore XT RD. Had to walk about 8 miles back to a rental cabin and annoyed wife after this one:



Took a spill when this happened (didn't tighten the stem enough after a rebuild) and wound up with some bruised ribs. I was able to reshape this fender back into shape, but it took some effort involving a baseball, a softball, wood blocks, a rubber mallet, and patience.



This happened on a commute. At least I was in the saddle at the time:



It may not be obvious, but this (DA 7400) brake caliper arm bent as a result of an impact with a down tube. Crit crash from my racing days. At least the down tube won.



I tried to fix it:



But it was a lost cause:



This one hurts the most, but the repair is nearly complete and the bike will back in operation shortly:

I don't document most of my failures, but this broken pedal was enough of a surprise that I snapped this shot.

gaucho and Neal - good gracious you have lots of cycling misfortunes. The only failure I recall was a vintage Look shoe sole separating on the long ride at Cirque one year. I was coming to a stop, trying to unclip - and just barely avoided falling and taking down Jan Heine. That would have been really special.

Those are the ones I had a chance to photograph! I've had pedals wander off, chains snap, front fenders shatter. It's a dangerous world for bike parts out there!

Some pretty serious failures here. I've been fortunate that none of mine caused damage to me or to the bike. But there have been a few.

Neal, I had a Cyclone spring break going to work once. For the return home, zip ties to the rescue!


Freewheel came apart on my homeward commute, the only time I've called AAA.


What happens when the chain overshifts inward. Of course one broke. Happened on my commute home.


Worn timing chainring on the stoker's crank on the tandem.


The result of an attempted fix using moped parts, obviously not up to the task after only 60 miles.


Do flat tires count? I rode another 2 miles on the way to work after this happened.


At the start of a ride, a broken bolt on a Simplex seat post. I drove off to Home Depot for a replacement and 10mm wrench.


The tandem's FD got so spongy that it was prone to throwing the chain off the chainrings (in either direction).

More failures.

We were riding the tandem when the drive train start making a funny clicking sound.


The chain popped out of the quick-cage on a Vx and got lodged under the rear tire, wearing a flat spot on the links.


On my commute home, spoke nipple with head torn off. The spoke protruded 2mm from the body and the threads had stripped in the head.


There is a theme here. Lots of failures commuting, but then, that accounts for many of my miles.

Don't have pic right now, but my otherwise perfect first gen Cyclone FD failed in exactly the same spot. I figured casting problem, and since it's the main body, no way to ever fix.

Broken Super Record chain ring tooth and warped ring. Shifted into the big ring and somehow, the chain got snagged...badly...and broke off the tooth, locked my back wheel and caused some damage to the paint on my BB shell. I was stuck up in the hills about 20km from home had to try to coast home the rest of the way by pedaling only on the straight part of the ring....using quarter pedal revolutions









Broken rear hub axle....



Damage same rear hub and spokes from chain going into the spokes...needless to say, I'm not going to rebuild this wheel since its almost 30yrs old....was a great set of training wheels back in the old racing days.

Not done yet...

This tire delaminated on the long winding descent down Mt. Diablo. Didn't realize what the noise was until I stopped at the bottom.



Cracked Dura Ace headset:



Mavic FD. This failed in two places. First the band cracked:



In the process of putting a replacement band back on, I noticed a crack at the base of the arm:



Galli Top Crit Rims retired after a rolled tubular, which lodged between the rim and the stay, causing me to skid for a while on bare rim. The cost of staying upright.

Just some of the things I've documented. None of this would have happened if I the bikes just hung on a wall! But no regrets.

I also have a broken rear axle pic. The thing is I commuted on that axle for a couple of years after it was broken. I figured the clunking sound was from the freewheel, but was proven wrong once I finally removed the rear wheel.



And I'm still trying to figure out what happened to the rest of the frame with this one:
