New project: Koga Miyata World Traveller '88
Hi everyone.
I'm new to this forum but decided to show you my new Koga Miyata World Traveller model year 1988 or 1989. I bought it a month ago from older fellow who had it for some time lying around in his basement. Koga Miyata is in great condition, with all period correct components. It still had original tires and foam bar wrap on it. I took it apart, polished and waxed both frame and fenders. Here is the foto of it after I attached fenders and front rack:
The bike has low rider mounts on fork and double eyelets for rack and fenders on dropouts. It has braze-ons for 2 bottle-cages and rear rack. It was originally equipped with Koga Miyata branded racks front and rear. Front lamp mounts directly onto the rack. It is connected with Sanyo chain stays bridge mounted Sanyo dynamo by internally rounted wire that connects into the fender. Some more photos:
This is the oldest photo of the bike I had. Just before I took it apart but just after I took the wheels off. The bike is equipped with Shimano Deore FD, brakes, front and rear hubs, Deore LX RD and Exage brake levers. I chacked the date codes on most of the parts. RD is dated 1990, rest is between 1986 and 1989. The paint job matches with bike from 1988 Koga Miyata catalogue, however it states the bike was build with FM-3 tubes. Mine has FM-2 stickers on the frame and HM-2 on fork. Also Koga Miyata "Lifetime Guarantee Frame" sticker:
Can it be the bike was produced by Miyata for US market? If I'm correct paint job matches 1986 Miyata 1000. Or is it just because mr. Miyata made a few extra FM-2 frames and they were sold as World Travellers instead of Randonneurs that were build originally with FM-2 tubes? It has MEIRINK painted on the top tube. There is very little information on the internet about that bike and most of it is compressed in this post.
Sorry for all those photos.
If anyone know anything else about that bike please let me know

and here are the miyata brochures .... Koga Miyata bought the Miyata frames from Miyata in Japan, and assembled the bikes themselves, but it's the same bikes and same componets (as far as I am aware)

Are you going to replace the foam? I left the foam on my Raleigh Alyeska which came to me unused, and toured up to Massachusetts and back on it. I will likely replace in the near future, though.

Yes. I got all of them figured out but those two braze-ons on seatstays.
I will replace the foam. I took a spin on it before I took it apart. The foam felt nice. But I don't think it will work on hot sammer days at all. Now I'm thinking between Brooks leather tape, some other, much cheaper leather-like tape or black cork tape.

Meirink is a Dutch name. It suggests that at least one previous owner was Dutch.
Nice bike, BTW. Oh, and welcome to the forums!

I just got new wheels Mavic A319 rims paired with Ultegra 6500 hub. Straight gauge spokes. I bought Schwalbe Marathon Plus 35C tires - overkill? Those are heavy but supposed to be bombproof.
Gray housing - decided to go with the original color scheme. What do you guys think? I still haven't decided on the bar tape. Is it worth to play extra for leather?

Lol, scanning the thread, I misread that as "but those two braze-ons for ashtrays" and thought "There really is every braze-on you could imagine!"

Those two bolts are still kind of a mistery for me. Really zero idea of what this could be for

I remember those Sanyo BB generators .. The lever released it onto the tire , you could use your left toe for that ..
The trick builders put another Downtube lever High, behind the seat Tube to pull it on and Off .
EZ .. Its to Mount The Dutch type of Frame Lock, to Keep the Bike .. AXA Solid Plus (black) - AXA Bike Security
I Have a 04 Koga WTR you can see where it Goes: Front side of the seat stays .. WB Bicycle Gallery: Robert Clark's Koga Miyata WTR
More like they subcontracted with Miyata to build their frames for them ,
by the time Mine was Made the company was using Taiwan based Factories ,
they still May, just now Miyata Has nothing to do with It , So they dont use Miyata's name any More .

(If not, a couple of ashtrays would be a cool alternative )
EDIT: I should post faster, so as to not let others beat me to it

Keep in mind I'm going to tour with this bike with panniers in Serbia, on God knows what roads. Also, my girlfriend is coming along so I'm not sure if I would go any faster then 12 mph anyway.
I was also considering Paselas TG for their vintage look. However they became unavailable in Poland lately. =/
I went with black Fiziks Microtex bar tape. It looks kind of like leather but it was 1/3rd the price of Brooks'. It also has interesting structure to it and I was told it's very durable.

That is an incredibly awesome bike! Ashtrays and all!
I think you are right in using the grey cable housing and I prefer the texture and thickness of the gel "cork" tape- the synthetic stuff.
Because you're posting the pictures as attachments on the Bike Forums, if you have a Windows computer:
Expand your picture,
Right Click on it and go to properties
Copy the address,
Close the open picture window,
Go to the picture icon above the text field,
Go to URL box
Paste in the address for the full size picture,
Un-check "retrieve file..." box.
And then "OK" and magic!!!
It sounds more complicated than it is- all you're doing is hosting the pic on Bike Forums then linking to the full size picture.

You mister just made this thread so much better! Thanks for that tip!
@Cork bar tape - I use cork bar tape on my track bike. It's the one from Bontrager. I really like the feel of it, however, it's not nearly as durable as I expected it to be. The time fel on the side to the ground once - tape has ripped and I had to sew it up or throw away. :/
Also, I'm nearing the completion of the project. All I need is the saddle! I will ask my brother whos a photographer to make some proper photos and update the thread!

I had a koga miyata touring bike I rode all over Europe; it was a great bike.
This looks like you're doing a great job on this. If looking for solid tires for touring, I'm a fan of continental top contact ii tires.

It is done, it is here. Complete rebuild with new wheels, every screw relubed and every part cleaned. The bike rides really stable giving that cadillac-y feel.
Im still missing low rider and rear rack. Finding original ones might be pretty impossible where I live tho :/ Also, since rebuild rear light doesn't work so I have to investigate on that too... did you know Koga supplied you with one additional real light-bulb that was slotted inside rear light? Yeah, me neither, but they did. Show you how things were made back in 1988.
