Burning Question of the Day

If 32mm @ 80psi is faster than 25mm @ 110psi, is 50mm @ 40psi faster than either one? Asking for a friend ...

Generic answer #1: It Depends.

Who's riding? Going easy or hard? What surface? How far?

On a smooth surface with a storm coming and half a mile to get home before it hits, the one that's on that bike on that day is probably going to be fastest.

Don't think I'd use that for my tires, though.

Can't beat the cost per mile, though.

I've had it end up on my tires a couple times.

If you want to go really fast .... use automobile tires.

Put them on your car.

Put the bike on the back, and hit the gas. But first .... turn on Strava.

Why do people even bother to waste time and complicate cycling by calculating this type of stuff ??

Perhaps, but misinformation on the internet will leave it in the dust, as it were.

I always put the widest tire I can find that fits and doesn't require deflation to remove the wheel. Why? comfort.

Oh, I dunno. I stopped paying attention to cycling tech (but didn't stop riding) in about 2009, when riding with 25mm tires was an admission of defeat in the battle to become a skinny cyclist, and when I started paying attention again, EVERYBODY was running at least 25s, and often 28s or larger at lower pressures, and going at least as fast in considerably greater comfort. Seems like a worthwhile endeavor to me.

Well, maybe not the 40mm tires. That's just silly on reasonable pavement.

If the SSI (sidewall suppleness index) (TM) (R) is appropriately low (or high, depending on the scale), then clearly yes.

Best way for him to tell is buy them and ride them. Then he can compare his data for the previous tires against the new tire. I usually take the average of best six out of twelve rides of the same route on each tire and or PSI and compare.

Let us know what his results were.

On the internet it will be picked up by an influencer, be promoted as 'the truth', and become the next big social movement . . . .

. . . . until a tik tok or a meme (or both!) of a cute kitty kat gets posted.

When I first saw the title, "Burning Question Of The Day", i thought it might be, "Since I got my new unpadded carbon fiber saddle and lowered my bars 10 cm, I have a burning sensation when I pee. Is that bad?"
