Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Silver stripe from home trainer

Hi all,

I recently bought a wahoo kickr snap and a proper tyre for this trainer.

however, just after the third training, I noticed that there is a silver stripe on the whole tyre, coming from the trainer.

is this a common issue? What could be the reason? Thanks

Common and nothing to be concerned about.

Thanks for your answer,

this gives me some kind of relief, however, I am surprised that it happens that early already and I haven’t seen anyone else (on YouTube etc) reporting about it.

You say the stripe is on the whole tire which I know can't actually be the whole tire, so maybe you mean the entire tread. And if that entire tread is just the raised part of the tire tread then probably not a problem.

However make sure your tire is inflated properly and the roller adjusted properly.

Tires lose air and depending a lot of things, they might need topping off every other day or ever week or so.

It happens to all wheel on trainers. Trainers will eat up tires so I keep old tires that aren't road worthy anymore and use them on the trainer to finish them off. Great way to get every mile out of a tire.

Am I the only one that never happens to? I read this all the time; about trainers grinding up tires, but I never see it. Wheel-on KickR Smart, tires at 95psi and roller adjusted as per instructions. No black dust or excess wear. Conti Super Sport Ultra tires, or something like that. Middle of the road rubber.

Definitely a normal thing. I use my "outdoor" rear tire on my trainer all the time, GP5000, and it'll develop a silver stripe where the tire makes contact with the trainer's roller drum. When you go back outside with that tire, the silver will be gone after a couple of miles of riding on the road. Nothing to be concerned about, but I do tend to take extra caution on wet roads for a few miles if I have that stripe as I worry it may slightly reduce grip.

Crazy, I don't get the black dust but I do get the stripe. And honestly it just gives a flat spot at the contact point causing a faster tire wear issue. I have never used a newer tire so I wonder if a newer tire with better rubber compounds would perform better? I know the trainer tires are very hard rubber so its not an issue. Just an unneeded purchase IMO.

I too calibrate every 3-4 rides and check pressures and such. But I am an OCD kind of guy

I've found the wear to be inconsequential.

Not sure if I have to, but I loosen the roller out of contact after each ride. That probably means a new spindown each ride, but I do that anyway after a short warm up.

I don't know if its necessary but yeah, I understand your logic for this. Just have to calibrate every time. Not saying its a bad thing either. Probably most accurate way for riding on Zwift. The Zwift power numbers are always elevated over my actual power meter on the bike.

The silver stripe is normal, but not the tread wear. I've never suffered fast tread wear.
