Bikes: Wow, where to start? A collection of 1980's and early 90's road, touring, and MTBs from the likes of Trek, Schwinn, Cannondale, Fuji, Miyata, Univega, Panasonic, and GT. It has gotten rather out of control.

It's been a year, I guess it's time to resurrect this thread again. Check out this 1992 Schwinn Crosspoint I snagged tonight!

Nice! Great way to restart a thread! That was Schwinn’s top hybrid model in the early 90’s.

Very nice! Interesting that it used Deore. Most hybrids of that era used lesser componentry.

Yep. This model was only around for one year(1992). Here is the spec page. https://waterfordbikes.com/SchwinnCa...cc_specsb.html

I really want to find one of the Miyata Alumicross bikes from 1989 or so. I had a TripleCross for a while.

If only I wasn't as tall as I was, @jbchybridrider then I could have a bike like that that looked that cool. I'll just have to get a tall Miyata Triple Cross.

Thanks. I hope you do find a Triple Cross or similar because vintage hybrids aren't that bad after all I think the Giants as good as any new steel gravel bike costing thousands it handles being bombed down fire trails jumping washouts with ease and right at home on the blacktop carving corners. I'm luvin it

That's fantastic. And my partial 'lament' is not to distract from being able to take vintage touring or CX bikes and putting large and aggressive tires onto (among other things). 25" vintage MTB frames look all sorts of awkward, versus the sloping top tube and overall proportion of MTBs closer to/at your frame size looking the business. Fast, yet agile and lithe, especially with drop bars and proper component + color composition. I have to take an estate/wagon (or a Liberty) and give it a lift kit to make it an off-roader that I think looks and works great. Sport tourers and ~1990 CX etc bikes are the tickets for me.

I have had a hankering to find a hybrid since late last year, came close a few times but never quite got there, but I was browsing CL today like you do and boom a $40 bike in this market! wait its a hybrid and gasp its my size!! Turns out it a Univega Via Montega from maybe 1993 based on the Shimano 400 CX group. It's a one owner and the nice (tall) lady who owned it had moved onto a flat bar road bike but had ridden and liked the bike for 20 years. It has a balky front shifter, the rear works but has no gear indicator anymore and I noticed as I loaded it up that its missing a rear spoke. BUT its a one owner garage stored bike that was well maintained and had a tune up 4 years ago. I am pretty pleased for $40. Not sure what I am going to do with it but pleased.. Ok enough rambling here are the pics

loading up my prize

KGO3372 3rd character could be O or Zero

Looks like there's one or two characters to the left of the K on that serial number. I think I see an E. Take another look. And to the left of the 7, looks like a poorly struck 8.

Great find; the Univegas of that era were quite nice. Some had some unusual custom tubing, and of course some exotic paint jobs. Yours looks nicely preserved.

Do I see low rider braze-ons?

Trigger shifter? The "liquid overhaul" might work -- shoot a degreaser into it and work the living daylights out of it until it responds better, then inject some light lube.

Good call madpogue per the photo below there was a W and E before the K so the serial number appears to be WEKGO3372 perhaps T-Mar can work his magic. I couldn't match it to the serial # database, but based on the Power Oval tubing sticker the Shimano 400cx group I think its a 93.

Yes definitely going with the liquid fix on the front trigger shifter once I get through some other projects and I agree for a $40 bike its in great shape. Based on the neighborhood where I picked it up these folks aren't hurting for $$. Oh and YES there are low rider braze ons on the fork.

Look for date codes on the components. There are decoders at vintage-trek.com . I have a Univega Via Activa, serial starting with WEKH, and based on the component dates, it appears to be a 1991.

According to Velobase the Shimano 400 CX components are 93 or 94 and a bike website pegged the Power Oval tubing as 93 when I get to working on it I will take a closer look at the components for dates

That's a nice grab -- I just finished up an overhaul of my '91 Alpina Comp, and it's a very solid rider. It’s not a hybrid, but I fixed it up as one.

Another early 90s hybrid data point:

Cannondale H-series hybrids used the frame and fork from the T-series touring bikes. When the hybrid thing hit, Cannondale didn't have a frame designed for them, so they just used the touring frames they already had.

The Cannondale 3.8 Series is one of the great touring frames of all time, and that "Hxxx" sticker will save you a couple of loaves of bread over a "Txxx."

Here's my 1990 Crossroads in cherry (according to the Specialized catalog). Got it for free early this year with the intention of turning it into a gravel grinder. It's so fun on gravel!
Before pic is the day I picked it up. After is just from this past Monday's ride:

I suppose this Hybrid replaces my recently sold '85 Trek 620, and my '91 Alpina Team, and my '73 Grand Sports. It looks huge but ST and TT hit my road bike sweet spot and the head tube is not silly MTB short which is cool I've only just begun playing with it and noticed that the forks are quite flexy. Most/all of the other hybrids have forks that look similar to my Newly acquired '91 Trek Multitrack 750--rather skinny and not at all like a early 90s MTB. I would have expected more beef.

I've been working on rebuilding a 100th anniversary edition 1995 Schwinn Searcher Express with drop bars. I think it's actually a pretty cool little chromoly frame set with lots of potential! Sweet paint job too! Gloss black with metallic gold flakes. (Phone camera doesn't do it justice)

Built this one a while back. An early 90's Nishiki decked out with the cool toys. Yes I did finally get a quill stem that fits.

Not sure if it fits the hybrid title but the geometry is pretty cool. This model also came in black chrome, one of the coolest colors ever but good luck finding them in good condition

It's a mountain bike, and a pretty high end one. I think there was only one bike above, maybe 2? I had one this color, and then on that was cream pearl with a brown rear triangle.,,,,BD
