Vintage S12S LTD Headset

This lock ring is odd. Three notches, 33mm. Anyone know the proper tool for this?

I asked about that some time back. You need a Hozan C-205, aka the Rock Ring wrench.

Thanks! These headsets also have a hard seat/gasket/? under this and above the top cup. And the top cup holding nut is an odd size (and thin of course). Might just have the LBS set it up for me.

Oh those things are funny. I have a whole drawer of them I've taken off various things. Seems they are often used as spacers. Often I can get them off with a hook spanner, but if I really need to, I use a punch.

I have one of these pedal wrench hook tool combos. The hook has a sharper angle than my bigger hook tools and works on the couple headsets I've seen like this.

My friend has a milling machine. May have him make a tool from a piece of pipe, like a freewheel type tool.

Sounds like fun!

I've got a milling machine I can use (at work) too, but call me lazy - I still use a punch!

A punch works on these. I also like the Hozan C 203; it is a very useful tool.

Same as yours but not serrated on the flats. Is yours a "rinko" style? a' la Jan Heine?

The hard plastic spacer in the headset stack needs to be tossed out. It was intended as a "packing block" to allow the headset to be assembled without the front reflector bracket installed. The forks could not be turned backwards (and thus the bike could not be boxed) with Fuji's big and beefy front reflector bracket in there. Many mechanics of this era did not know this, and the unfortunate results were headsets that always became loose as the plastic always keeps squishing out flatter under pressure.

Wow, thank you, that answers a lot of the mystery. I was looking at the lock ring that threads on and thinking maybe just use a spacer in there instead. It would then be more standard by a long shot. No special tools

The Hozan C-203 only works on a ring with an even number of notches. The smaller radius end of the C-205 will work, as will an adjustable hook spanner.

I thought about that issue before I recommended the Hozan C 203. The C 203 has a nice serrated set of jaws that will fit comfortably around the headset and so it works with any one inch headset regardless of the number of notches. A rag underneath will help prevent serrated jaws from marring the finish in the headset. In any case, that's why I think the C 203 is a very versatile tool. I think of it as a channel lock optimized for headsets.

Back from the dead, with a different S12S LTD frame. Need a JIS headset, 27.0 race 30.0/30.0 cups As noted above these came with a Tange MA 60. Those can be found but weigh a ton. Also the reliable Tange Passage is still out there. Anyone else have a headset they like in a JIS size?

Jeezo... relax your brain matter.
Buy on ebay an adjustable spanner wrench, made in the United States of America at a cost of under $25 shipped. Buy it used because of you buy a new one at 3x cost, the first time you use it, well you know....

The post on the prior bike is history. That bike is taken care of. I have a second S12S that has no head set, the old one is far too corroded to use.

According to their website, Tange still makes JIS versions of the following 1" threaded headsets with an alloy body: Falcon FL250C, Levin Alloy 1500, Passage DX, and Vantage. Finding them may prove difficult in the US, though. All but the Vantage seem to be available in both silver and black (Vantage appears to be silver only). IMO you can't really go wrong with a Tange - you might be able to do better, but Tange hardware is pretty nice.

Numerous no-name JIS threaded headsets appear to be available on eBay in the $20 range in various colors. Several new JIS Dura Ace 7410 track headsets (all I saw seemed to be silver colored) are also available on eBay, but those all seem to be north of $100 (some "pre-owned" ones are available too).

Best of luck. I was looking some time ago, and the Tange Passage DX was available from some European vendors. Unfortunately, I was looking for ISO, so I don't know if they also had JIS versions.

Last edited by Hondo6; 04-16-23 at 06:09 AM. Reason: Add link to appropriate Tange website page; correct error (alloy JIS no-name HS I found available on eBay are threadless).

One other point: if you go with a Tange HS, you might want to double check the cup size of the specific item you're purchasing with the vendor. At least on the standard (steel) Passage, some models with a 27.0mm crown race are shipped with 30.2mm cups vice 30.0mm JIS cups.

I own one such Passage, bought intentionally - I needed a 30.2mm Passage fixed race and wanted a spare 27.0mm crown race. I lucked into one cheap that was new and had both. Cup size was clearly marked on the outside of the box. (Passage crown races are available separately, but good luck finding a fixed race as a repair part. I couldn't.)

Dunno if Tange is doing that "across the board" with their JIS type headsets or not. But if you need 30.0mm cups, getting a 30.2mm instead might possibly be a problem.

I found a Levin last night and ordered it. Sheldon Brown’s site says that he put 30.2 into 30.0 frames. I am not keen on that as I fear a cracked head tube. My Fuji Gran Tourer SE has a Tange Levin NL 500 in it. I broke that frame and can scavange that set. Thanks for the feedback!
